Charles VanDoren passed away yesterday.
His story is an interesting one in the 1950s Game Show Scandals.
Love this film.

Semple was an angry man. He liked being famous. He knew the truth because he had also been given the answers. He wanted to continue, but the powers that be on that show decided to oust him in favor of Charles Van Dorn. This left Semple very bitter.
If you havn't seen Quiz Show, i think you might like it. Fun fact: Robert Redford directed it.

I really liked this movie too. It was done right.
I'm not sure of what you mean when you say,
It's not like anyone was hurt by it.
This was cheating the public because they assumed that what they were watching was real. That is what made it so exciting. It was all a lie.
This was also cheating other possible contestants who may have had a chance at being on the show and winning money.
This hurt the families of all who were involved in this mess.
I'd say that this hurt a great number of people.

I guess you're right that there were some negatively affected by this. I was making the assumption that everyone involved was in on the rigging. I don't think it was as big a deal as it was made out to be. For the players who thought they might win money but didn't, it's not much different than games at a county fair where the outcome is decided before play begins. We still see dishonest presentation on TV today with "Reality" television, where the viewer is told it represents reality, but none of it is actually real.

Well, you have to consider that television was a new medium then . People were still recovering from WW2. They believed that these game shows were legit. That made it exciting to them. When it came out that it was all rigged, it was hard to know who or what to trust.
Watching this movie, I think I felt the most sympathy for the elder Van Dorens. Charles came from a distinguished academic background. To have lied to the world, but especially to his family was such a blow.

Ah the 1950s! I was only in my thirties back then and women and non whites didn't have the rights they do today. Good times.
I find that unfunny…..
Do you honestly feel that way?

Ok. I guess that the inmates are restless tonight. They obviously have nothing to do. I had no idea that this would shake them up so much.
