Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Renaissance Man

    dlonney — 17 years ago(February 11, 2009 12:06 AM)

I went through Ft. Leonard Wood Basic Training in Summer 1993. After seeing Renaissance Man. I think Greory Hines did a dead on accurate portrayal of an Army Drill Sergeant. Comparing him to the ones I had. He was stern, Professional, Yelled when needed. But not over the top. He wasn't a sadist like Gunny Hartman in Full Metal Jacket.
And everyone knows. Army Drill Sergeants don't yell constantly like Marine Corps Drill Instructors. They are not always in your face. But looking back at my Drill Sergeants. Gregory Hines had it down.
Except for one thing. When the one recruit was reciting the poem in the rain. SFC. Cass looked to be on the verge of tears. I don't know any Drill Sergeant who would have been moved like that. Maybe it was just me.

I think the point was to have a Drill Sgt. moved to tears

The point was to show that the Drill Sergeant could finally see the point of DeVito's project. And do the right thing.

Poor little thing. Did the big bad Gunny Hartman hurt the little soldier man's feelings? Did the little soldier man finally realize he probably couldn't make it in the Marines?

              You referring to me?
              I'm no soldier. I'm a Paratrooper.

                If he was, he's illiterate.

How things change. When I went through in '89 the D.S. was in our face 24/7. I don't know about the Marines as I scored too high on the ASFAB to qualify for the Marines.
