Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — The Santa Clause

The Santa Clause says that whoever puts on the clothes of a deceased Santa gets to take over the job. This kind of promotes a warlord atmosphere where the most vicious get to be in control. What happens if the elves get power hungry and start killing santa to take over the rule?
What would have happened if tim allen had called the cops after the guy fell off the roof? Most likely no one would have ever put on the clothes and there wouldnt ever be a santa.
What if some crazy homeless rapist guy wandered theough tim allens yard and put on the jacket? Is he now the santa with full control of the elf population?

That problem is addressed in The Santa Clause 3, the escape clause. Martin Short as Jack Frost is great.

The previous Santa planned on not being Santa anymore, and the elves were in on it.

Surely the elves could conduct a hostile takeover and push Santa off a roof if they feel like he's a bad one.

There's also the factor that becoming Santa changes them mentally, too. Just like with Scott, he suddenly started to like milk and cookies, let kids sit on his lap to ask what they want for Christmas, became "jollier" all around, etc. It didn't seem like it was something he just decided to do, but was overcome by it as he turned into Santa.
