The Long Day's Journey Into Night that I was talking about is completely unrelated to those other films. It's just a coincidence that it shares the same name.
    Where's the TRAP???
Some people who are attempting to defend a film they like will ask the critic of that film what their favourite movies are, just so that they can point out the flaws in them.

Oh. My mistake. I assumed that you were talking about the play by Eugene O'Neill.

True, but it does give people an idea of what the critic does like.
You asked a pretty question; I've given you the ugly answer.

For me, it is an 8/10. Good, but not one of the best movies of all time.

I agree, but my score remains slightly lower.

That IMDb top 250 is to be taken with a huge grain of salt.
It was never once mentioned in MSM or the world at large does not know about it therefore it is irrelevant.
The only ones who vote on the 250 are just regular Joe and Jane movie watchers who are mostly voting from their emotions and not for any technical reasons.
Instead the AFI list is the one to go with or those on a critics list who are the pros when it comes to knowing things about movies.

When people search a movie title, one of the first things they'll see is the IMDb page and its overall rating of the film.
This often guides people's decisions on whether or not they'll bother watching the movie.
Maybe it's just because I'm from a pre-Netflix era, but I seem to recall a lot of people referring to the IMDb Top 250 for movie recommendations.
Also, sometimes the professional critics don't know what the **** they're talking about. I much prefer an overall, generalised rating based on thousands of submissions.

Have you ever watched a movie that was in the lower number range and liked it?

Sure, but I've also enjoyed quite possibly a larger number of films that are, or have at some point been, in the Top 250.

Not every film ever made is going to resonate with you. Liking or not liking a film is somewhat subjective. However, it is an extremely good film, hitting a lot of points such as story, pace, continuity and outcome. Great cinematography and score, and pointed direction by Darabont.
