Why wasn't Tim Robbins nominated for an Oscar?

Out of all the acting awards SR got, Robbins was only nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Best Actor award alongside Freeman himself. Freeman was also nominated for Best Actor nominations at the Golden Globes and the Oscars.
I don't understand why Robbins wasn't also nominated for either of those awards considering he's the main character and the story was about him.
What gives?

The movie was pretty much overlooked when it first screened and didn't get the accolades it deserved until years later. Tim was collateral damage.
