Why would anyone approach a wild animal?

I don't think Will knew the animal was alive before it bit him. He might've thought it was dead and was simply trying to drag its corpse off the road before it surprised him and bit him.

You could have just made your point with the second sentence and left it at that. I hate when people make comments like that in order to feel superior, "some of you guys aren't too bright". What an ass.

My impression was that he thought it was dead (or mortally wounded) and was simply removing the carcass from the road so that it wouldn't be desecrated, and also to protect other drivers. Only when his head was turned did the wolf open its eyes.
The bigger question is: How does the wolf get up and run away, spry as can be, after just getting hit straight-on by a vehicle? -

In order to make sure it was dead and not suffering. Anyone who lives in any kind of non urban environment will likely end up hitting some kind of animal and you dont always kill it on impact and the humane thing to do is to put it out of its misery.
Will thought the wolf was dead, there was even a shot of it with it's tongue hanging out of it's mouth. I believe he was dragging it off of the road so as not to be run over by another vehicle.
He was also checking to make sure it was dead and if necessary kill it. -

Been there. You're truly better off leaving it alone, even if you've suffered damage to yourself or your vehicle. Saw my share lay there for awhile then get up and make tracks.
Bear in mind the dramatic license involved: This wasn't "just a wolf" he was dealing with
