wow. I can see why people may not like the film - if they are looking for good special effects or should I say 'realistic' type effects. Hmmm. Bad acting? Predictable? Well the acting is great and its only predictable to a point. Yeah, I think most of us knew who killed the wifey. Clearly they do not turn into wolves or dogs like say Underworld, but what they do works very well for this film.
I think the producers originally wanted to make Nicholson, etc more wolf like and that may have pleased those special effects junkies, but in the end the choice to go more humanistic worked well.
James Spader is definitely the perfect sleazy, backstabbing bad guy! -

I agree it sucks I can count on one hand the movies I've either walked out on or should have and this was a should have. When it came out I was excited Love Jack and this seemed perfect for him. No chemistry, bad story, bad acting, bad special effects.. BAD..

I liked this movie a lot, and agree that it's about the laughs and the characters, and not the thrills. Michelle and Jack are a hoot, and seem to be having a ball.
That's a sexy little growl from Jack, and a sexy little laugh from Michelle, as the handcuffs scene fades out. I disagree with the view that they had no chemistry. I think you'd have to be dead to not respond to either of them! -

SPOILER-I gave it a fairly low grade. I liked a few things, but overall, very stereotype and very predicable, even to the point that there was no suspense, and for some reason, soon as the wife was killed, I somehow knew who did it and how. The killer was just too off kilter and too easy to read. It was pretty well telegraphed with one scene earlier that the lycanthropy didn't turn a man evil unless he already was, and the wife betrayed the other guy in trying to come back to Nicholson, so even though Nicholson didn't like her, he had no motive to kill her like the other guy did. Did any one else think it was obvious soon as the wife was killed?
Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time
that's not funny! -

I wonder what did you who think that it stinks expected from this film???
Obviously did not get it right.
I mean Jack Nicholson, Michael Pfeiffer and James Spader in a werewolf movie, that alone makes it worth to watch and plus it is very clever satirical movie that only has a little bit of horror intertwined.
And rating 5.9 is hilarious, I guess if some attractive but mediocre actors
like Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp had played leading role it would probably be 7 or 8 as it deserves! -

I haven't read through the other posts yet, but I can't be the only one who thought that James Spader as a werewolf looked just like the Lucky Charms leprechaun. I agree with you on this one.this film is definetly good for some laughs, but that's it. The shots of an overweight, middle aged man leaping high in the air just had me on the floor laughing. And speaking of leaping-whenever one of the "werewolves" leapt at something, you could almost see the harness jerking them airborne.I thought Michelle Pfeiffer looked beautiful and that was all. I really wish they had ended the movie with the scene where she informed the cops that she could smell the liquor on their breaths-that would have let the audience know that she is now a werewolf, omitted the cheesy final scene, and redeemed some of the sheer ridiculousness of the crappy special effects.

I like this movie. I found it quite atmospheric (mainly because of that wonderful score) and it took rather an original approach to the whole werewolf myth. In particular, I love the actors in this movie. Nicholson was nicely understated and very convincing as the loser who gains a new lust for life following his encounter with a wolf, Pfeiffer is a beautiful and sympathetic presence, and Spader is just awesome as the duplicitous Stewart.
I only disliked the ridiculous final fight between Nicholson and Spader, and some of the special effects were also rather ropey, but in general, I found it to be a pretty good film and quite underrated.

just watched this for the first time, and I must say I was impressed. A more complex and deeper stranded story than I foresaw. I didnt see it coming with Pfieffer being one too, as well Plummer which it does suggest. Defintely not a film for gore or effects laden fans but the story, drama and acting was pretty spot on. Pfieffer actually looks amazing in it.

The people who detest this film are sadly people who think Twilight is brilliant and Kristen Stewart a Goddess. These idiots have no grasp on intelligent filmmaking, which "Wolf" is a prime example of. The hero isn't your typical 20 year-old ripped Ken doll, but rather a middle-aged, overweight NORMAL person, who finds a love interest in Michelle Pfeiffer- a REAL woman who is an example of a REAL beauty. I ignore the buffoons who try to tell me crap like Twilight is quality.

Agreed. Chemistry. The transformation is the film. The growling and biting well kinda gross. Some great lines though and Spader is so wonderfully creepy.

"what a stinker"
THANK YOU!
I thought I was the only one who thought the talents of Jack, James and Michelle were completed wasted on this very generic, paint-by-numbers, formulaic clap trap.
James was such a scene stealer in this film and Jack is great as always. But not even they can work miracles in trying to resurrect any semblance of life into this overly long and boring story. And how do you make a werewolf film boring?! That takes skill right there.
I tried watching this film on several occassions when they would play it late on cable or on TNT or whatever channel I happen to be flipping through. I just can't watch this film in one sitting. I have to keep changing the channel because it is just so dull and exhausting to watch.
