Do you Think They Really Had Fun?

i'm sure there was some ad libbing thrown in there. just yesterday i watched the one where they buy Drew the VW Bug. he comes into the bar and one of the gang says something like "hey its the man with the bug" and then Drew turns to a customer and says something about syphillis. the look on Lewis's face was priceless, he had to hide a little so his laughter wasnt visible. i'm guessing Drew didn't have a reply in the script and he just added that.
but you also see Drew crack up a little very often, its something i've noticed with Jerry Seinfeld as well on his show. i'm guessing its just because they werent actors so it was harder to keep a straight face.
but it all definitely makes for fun viewing. its why a character like Stefan on SNL is so adored.people just love seeing him trying to keep a straight face. lol -

I think they had a blast, and I think that the times when they're making jokes or teasing each other and laughing, it's real laughter. At least that's what I like to think. I mean, I've heard that Drew, Ryan, and Diedrich are just about the nicest guys in Hollywood, so I like to think of them enjoying themselves whilst entertaining the rest of us.

Of course there was allot of improvised comedy. I mean Ryan Styles is a professional improv comedian. You can tell when they were ribbing each other they were having a blast. Like you've pointed out, I think the fact that they're on the verge of breaking character and bursting out in laughter at any moment only makes the show better.

A good example of this is in the episode,
In Ramada Da Vida
, where they're auditioning guitar players.
When they reject Joey Ramone, he gets mad, throws his guitar down and stomps off. But when he trips over the cord, that wasn't planned and the laugher of the three guys and their being unable to keep a straight face was real. It was a busted take they kept in the show for that very reason.
You're right. Things like that add to the charm of the show.
I really liked the show and, toward the end, they moved it around so much with
Grace Under Fire
(another good show) until it just disappeared.
My favorite line from the show is still, "That's the thing about sex; somebody's always going to be disappointed. So far, I've been lucky. It's always been the woman." -

Diedrich Bader said in an interview with Kevin Smith that he had a lot of fun on the set of the show. He also said that the writers realized very quickly how lucky they were to have someone like Ryan Stiles and he improvised a lot. I'm sure they all did, but Ryan is the king of it.

I think with Drew and Ryan on the show, ad-libbing was probably a huge part of the show. At least more so than other sitcoms. They have that "on the verge of cracking up" look more than any other cast.

bump I saw the episode where they introduce Mr. Wick. There is a scene where the gang is in Drew's kitchen and Lewis starts to ad-lib and you can see the other 3 cracking up. There are a few other scenes like that where someone starts to lose it.
Loved this show. -

The episode where Kate wants to sing and is horrible has an obviously ad-libbed line when Drew says something about that being the worst thing he's ever heard. Lewis asks him something like, "Have you ever heard somebody start a car with a cat on the manifold?" Drew can hardly choke out, "No", and Lewis says, "Then yeahthat's the worst thing you've ever heard." Knowing Drew's hysterical laughter on Whose Line, I'm sure he screwed up a lot of takes on this show!
