Ace was stupid for not taking Don back

Don was stealing from Ace, at least in Ace's mind. Don messing up the machines was taking money from his pockets. No boss would keep someone who's level of incompetence caused losing profits.
The real mistake was not taking Webb out after he subtlety threatened Ace. -

He also has to set an example to the rest of his employees or he pretty much opens the door to anybody who wants to steal from him taking a crack at it. Surely there was an alternative to taking him back.
Webb could have talked one of the other casino managers into taking poor, stupid, corrupt Don on. Who wouldn't want to do a favor for an influential commissioner? Ace could have written a glowing recommendation but said that he and Don just had personal differences and he couldn't work with Don anymore.
Problem is out of your face now and he could move on having done a favor for Commissioner Ward by looking out somewhat for his idiot brother in law. -

Yes, or something; anything. All Pat Webb wanted was some gesture of goodwill. "Sorry, but I can't help you" was the worst possible answer. Ace had the chance to make a powerful friend, and made a powerful enemy instead.

Lol, whuut? This is a realistic mafia movie. It is in fact based on a true story. It's not like those other fictional mob movies and tv shows where the Mafia is so aggrandized one wonders why they just don't 'whack' any law enforcement office who dares to look at them wrong.
Webb had the power. Over every mafioso in Vegas. He was an elected official, a politician, a public figure. What he says, goes. The Mafia in Vegas found out the hard way what happens when they f*** with those who allow them to operate. -

Ace was right, he was just in the wrong thinking he can be right running a mob casino. "you're either too dumb to see there's a scam going on or you're in on it". Fire him in front of your other staff and customers so that everyone knows not to F with you. Brilliant scene and ultimately his down fall as with so many.

A lot of you are forgetting the problem Ace was facing and didn't realize until his hearing. Ace had been in Las Vegas for some time. He was even getting awards for helping out the gaming community in Las Vegas. But Ace forgot that he wasn't and would never be a part of the "good ol' boys club" of Las Vegas.
Pat Webb even told Ace that he's welcomed here. But in the end. He'll be handed his hat on his way out of town.
Ace could have given Pat's nephew a token job doing nothing and been cleared of this problem. -

I don't believe that Ace should have had to take Don Ward back just because he was county commissioner Pat Webb's brother-in-law. As we saw, Don was incompetent and even Webb acknowledged it. Why couldn't Webb accept the fact that his brother-in-law wasn't competent enough in his job at the casino and just move on?

Because Don was family and Pat was connected.
Now give him a low-paying job like guarding a broom closet all day and either Don will be happy doing nothing all day or more than likely quit after about two weeks.
Of course Ace didn't have to take him back, but it would represent good go-flow and good relations with the native high-ups if Ace did Pat Webb this small favor.
Ace was already skating on thin ice as it was not having the proper credentials and millions of dollars were at stake. I'm sure the bosses back east would have no problem with Ace giving Don a low-paying worthless job in exchange for good relations with the local authorities.
This small favor by Ace would give Ace some good leeway if he ever needed a bigger favor from the locals. All Pat was asking for was some consideration and he would probably be inclined to reciprocate the favor at some point.
The local high-ups could either make Ace's life heaven or hell and it seems that Ace choose hell. -

Yes, Pat acknowledged that Don was basically worthless and asked that he be placed in a lower position where he could do no harm.
The Nevada boys gave the mob some serious consideration and now one of them was asking for a very small consideration in return. That this small favor was refused really upset this delicate arrangement. -

Ace was really good at his job, but I think pride and the practical need to have a trophy wife were huge weaknesses that ultimately brought him down.
I notice your English gets better when you want something.
