How did John know they were terrorists?
You can see him look at the reflection and he could see a badge number, is that the only thing that tipped him off?
it was when he was talking about his wife buying him 2 lottery tickets every week and playing the same numbers.

Ricky tells McClane earlier in the film that he bets his badge number - 6991 every week in the lotto. The terrorist takes the badge from Ricky's dead body pretending to be a cop but McClane notices the badge number in the elevator, thus realising something is wrong.

The badge number and the fact that the guy says raining dogs and cats not cats and dogs. Pay attention whilst watching next time
