Pete and PJ were on a father-son bonding trip so there was really no reason to show them. I suppose they could have been in the beginning, but I guess the writers thought it wasn't necessary.

I always thought that too, I mean Pete is kind of a dick so it would make sense they got divorced. They weren't important so why include them? They could have said something like Peg didn't want to go along on the trip or that she was taking Pistol somewhere else but who cares?
