The movie could have stood on it's own without narration but, Wilford Brimleys narration (voice) added an overall flavor that turned a good movie into, what I believe, should have been an Academy Award winnerits one of my all time favorite movies.

Absolutely one of my favorite all time movies as well, altho I must confess. Listening to Wilfred Brimley narrate it, brings to mind his 'diabetic supply' infomercial (and the controversy surrounding the efficacy of the product), and that is NOT a good thing

                  Narration problem solved. Finally!
Because I can't stand this narration at all; and it doesn't add anything to the film.
And so, I'm quite relieved that I finally got the information that the voice-over on the pictured DVD can be turned off by choosing the "Director's Audio" track.
But: It's a region 2 DVD, playing only in Europe & the UK.
                  VLC player will play it.

My husband swears the narration that is obviously NOT Wilfred Brimley is by Cam Clarke, whereas I swear it sounds just like Tom Berenger - and it's supposed to be Tom Berenger, because he says "I" when he's talking about what TOm Berenger just went thru, but hubby still swears it sounds NOTHING like TB, and MUST be Cam Clarke??
I have to ask, because usually, hubby is VERY VERY good at picking out voices, and I swear it sounds just like TB.

There are two versions. The original was definitely Wilford Brimley, and played randomly throughout the movie. But the version playing on HBO this month only has a partial narration, closer to the beginning, and it's not Wilford Brimley.
We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.

Just saw this movie again on cable..first time not using Wilford Brimley, but a different male voiceover through various parts and at the end a female narrator sounding very much like Barbara Hershey. This was the first time I heard the 'Lillian' character narrate in all the years that I have watched this movie.
