I don't think it's a bad movie. It is quite a bit more mainstrem than any of the other movies with Johnny Depp, and predictable insofar as I was in no doubt he would get off the hook in some way, i.e. not kill the governor and get his daughter and himself out of there alive. But it was still quite thrilling to watch, and I liked the acting as well.

Yes!! Thank you. The script was such an utter catastrophe, no amount of good acting, cinematography, or direction could even begin to save it.
What troubles me most is, why on earth would Johnny Depp or John Badham choose to do this movie? I can't imagine that either one of them needed the money that badly. -

Bad script(Depp doesnt say anythg), bad music (way too dramatic), bad acting. This movie was AWFUL. Johnny depp's performance was really disappointing, it was insignificant. He's my fave actor but this was such a bad film!

"Was anybody else shocked by how bad this movie was?"
When somebody says that a movie was bad, I think that should make some points supporting its idea as well. You just throw in half a line in a thread and you dissapear.
This is a suspence movie and let me tell you, that's what you get. Suspence until its last second. It's definetely one of the best suspence thrillers I've seen in a long time. Name one better, I'll buy it in a minute!

i thought it was reasonably good and satisfying. im sure its not the worst movie i've seen with johnny depp, and i favor johnny's work, so i may be just saying this, but i did enjoy it. sorry to be against those who disagree. he looked good in it too- adds bonus points

I am open-mouthed that so many people think this was a bad movie! And this has nothing to do with Johnny Depp - I thought this movie was fantastic!
Bad script? Why? Did the characters behave in unbelievable ways? Was the dialogue cheesy or forced? Did the events not build properly from what came before? Could you tell what was going to happen next? (Not just the final outcome- anyone could guess at a happy ending.) Did things happen later in the film that weren't properly set up earlier? What? I thought it was an excellent script.
Bad directing? Okay, I don't know how to judge directing. But bad directing usually results in a movie I don't like, and this I loved.
Bad acting? Where? Walken wasn't hamming; he had to pose a real and intimidating threat. Depp? I totally believed in his shock and terror, and then his gradually recovering enough to start trying to get out of it.
Someone didn't like the music. What music? I've seen this three times now, and the music was so non-intrusive that I can't even remember any of it.
My only criticism of the movie is the silly dream-sequence in the middle where it looks like Walken throws Depp over the railing. That was unnecessary, but :
: not enough to make it a bad movie.
