how did this get rated so high? you have to take a point off for each of the following:
1)both Christopher Walken and Johnny Depp were miscast: both are awesome in their own right, but both were horrible portraying their characters in this one. Walken's character could have been a helluva lot more menacing or scary, and should have shown an increasing amount of agitation towards Depp's character with every mishap. Depp showed a severe lack of emotion on his face throughout the entire film like he was just mailing in his performance.
2)boring, suspenseful music: you know good thriller music when you hear it, and this wasn't it
3)bad writing/plot devices: Charles S. Dutton's character conjured up a plan to get Depp in the room with the governor, got multiple people involved and cooperating, and all within a matter of about 3 minutes. REALLY???????
4)plot matter in general not very believable, even for a movie: you have all these people involved in wanting to kill the governor, yet they hinge all their plans on the back of some unknown person they pick up at a train station. i understand their reason for wanting an unconnected patsy to pin everything on, but any one of them could have done the deed and leave out so many variables that a random person brings.
5)entire movie is centered around a 1:30PM deadline but never explains why
6)not a thing that happens in this movie has you thinking "oh that was clever."
7)plot in general waaaaay too simple and one-dimensional. no back story? no explanation why they want the governor killed? a simple unimaginative ending? the fact that you see credits rolling within 60 seconds of the bad guys being confronted and then killed by Depp and no other closure of any kind just leaves an empty feeling.
this movie probably doesn't deserve a 3, but it bothers me that so many people gave it an 8 or above to get it to 6.3 really bothers me. this one really sucked.

6.3 is too low for this great movie it should have been rated 7.3

        1. I thought Walken and Depp were wonderfully cast, as were mason and Dutton. Depp is an accountant so i don't expect muych more than a bewildered "how the f~ck do I get out of this mess" look on his face.
Walken is very menacing and i don't think I would ever want to be in a car with the guy- even when he's a GOOD guy, well alone a bad guy. Every step along the way I was convinced he would have no problem giving the order to shoot the girl- and his partner would do it.
        2. I agree, the music wasn't anything special. It didn't assist in escalating the suspense or winding up the tension.
        3. Again, I agree that the timing of that particular scene was a bit contrived and convenient. But I've seen much worse in better films.
        4. I think that the plot matter makes the film what it is. It's not really an issue of believability inasmuch as posing the question for the audience that if they were put into the same position, what would they do? The plot matter in general is the film, regardless of there being dozens of ways to accomplish the bad guys' goals more effectively.
5)I think the itinerary explained the 1:30 deadline as being the last chance they had to make a good public assassination in that town. And that was the key- to make sure that the killing took place in front of witnesses so this unknown "anybody" was nuts enough to kill the governor and get caught for it.
6)Did anything NEED to be "clever"?
7)What more closure did you need? The news identified the conspiracy, the bad guys were taken down, the Republican bigwig got away and our heroes are alive and so is the governor and little girl.
I thought they explained the need for the governor to be killed quite elegantly: that she had changed her tune and broken all her promises once in office and they needed to make sure that her re-election would not occur, as it was very damaging to those contributors who got her elected in the first place.
I certainly don't see it as an "8",myself. But I found it to have a Hitchcockian vibe to the story and how it was filmed. And with that, the originality, suspense and the performances of the five leads were solid enough to garner a "7" from me.

"Did anything need to be clever?"
To be a good thriller? Of course it did. I didn't see the film, I only read the screenplay, and I kept thinking, "How the hell did this ever get green-lighted?" Totally unbelievable and just plain dumb for all the reasons cited above.
