I'm curious to find out what Rimbaud (dicaprio) is smoking? I would guess tobacco or something like that, but there's a scene where he's smoking and he seems to vaguely stoned. any ideas?

I'd say it was hashish as well, though the era was rife with opium use as well - and with the 'absynth' cocktails, who cares what it was?! Those people were probably 'blotto' 18 hours a day! LOL - F*^@'ed UP! (w/ 6 hours to sleep it off!)

It must have been either cannabis or hashish because opium puts you to sleep (and dream.)
As a pipe smoker and collector, I LONG to own a long, Dublin-shaped churchwarden pipe such as the one Leonardo smoked in this film !
If the Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard, It can also be like a chicken-pox mark.

Hashish is cannabis, or derived directly from it at any rate.
Opium can help ease you off to sleep, but that's not the primary effect. It gets you high as other opiates do, ideally putting you in a "nod" state which is an intermediate point between being awake and asleep.
