I disagree.
Although I like/liked River as an actor, I think that Leo was the best person to portray Rimbaud in this film. He looks so much like Rimbaud, it's uncanny.
I know a lot of die-hard Rimbaud fans hated this movie, especially that a non-French actor played Rimbuad, but I think Leo did an exceptional job. David Thewlis is not one of my favourite actors, but he played the whining Verlaine to perfection. All in all, I think River was too dark a person to play Rimbaud. Although Rimbaud certainly had very dark moments, I don't think River could have captured his mischevious side in the same way that Leo did. -

I seem to read this a lot, that River could have played Leonardo's roles better, or is perfect for all the roles Leonardo has gotten.
I've never seen any of River's movies (I started my love for the Phoenix's with Joaquin) but was he compared many times to Leonardo?? Are they a lot a like in their acting techiniques and movies??
Thanks for any help! -

River Phoenix and Leonardo DiCaprio were such different actors at those ages that it's hard to imagine a genuine comparison. Yes they were contemporaries, so to speak, although Phoenix had started his career much sooner. Both made it big early on, and both received Supporting Actor Oscar nominations ("Running on Empty" for River and "Gilbert Grape" for Leo), but the similarities basically end there except for the fact both played bi-sexual roles (River in "My Own Private Idaho" and Leo in this movie).
I couldn't imagine Leo as Young Indiana Jones. Or River as Arnie in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?"
They are good enough actors to switch the roles, but somehow I don't think the result would have been the same. -

River was a highly sensitive actor, and I think he could have captured the soul of a poet more completely than DiCaprio. However, I have to say DiCaprio did his best (although his youth and acting inexperience at the time do show through). River was wise beyond his years in comparison.

I am a Frenchman and Rimbaud lover and I certainly did not mind the adorable Leonardo DiCaprio playing Arthur Rimbaud, especially as he plays him so well, so intensely.
River Fenix was seen in too few films to say much about him. He was kind of all-American, Anglo-Saxon. Leo is more exotic and more strange-looking, though his actual ressemblance to Arthur Rimbaud is slight.
This is Leo's greatest film so far.

why didn't I post in this thread before???
I lurve Rivdog (Laura made this collaboration). I think he was an outstanding actor and Leo is the only actor that matched him at his young age. I have all of Rivers movies and you only have to watch Jimmy Reardon, Stand By Me, Mosquito Coast and running on empty to see his brilliance.
I love River so much. He was a sweet, gorgeous soul. RIP Rio.

river phoenix is my fav actor and i think it would have been good if he was in it but i cant say if he would have been better than leo.and i think leo gives off this feeling of greatness.leo looks the part as well he looks like he could be a writter and i dont think there's much point in saying it should have been river, it wasnt river because river died. i also think that leo is a river phoenix fan.by the way scoripio1964, river was gonna have christan slater's part not tom cruise's part in interview with a vampire.
