I definitely don't believe Kevin hated the first one, he got pretty good praise 4 the small movie and he was struggling at the time with films! This was really his first really good movie. I love Footloose but it wasn't as good as Tremors! This film helped get Bacon back on track after not finding his ground in films since the success of Footloose! If he's embarrassed it would be with one of the other films he made before Tremors!

Yeah I always say "So-and-so wasn't in this movie because they obviously couldn't afford him/her." I'm sure it had a lot to do with his success in much bigger movies by the time 1996 rolled around. But I don't mind it gave Fred Ward a lot more to do in this movie and allowed him to be the lead. He's a great underrated actor.

According to the producers (Stampede Entertainment, check out their website for all you ever wanted to know about the Tremors films!), he was working on Apollo 13 at the time, and hesitated back and forth about whether to do it, but ultimately said yes, perhaps out of loyalty to the producers for the first movie. He eventually backed out, and by the end of pre-production the film was put under the MCA Home Entertainment banner and done direct to video. Unlike subsequent sequels, this one was written to be theatrical right up until they made it and it shows, a clever script that doesn't know it's a step down the food chain to the original (parts 3 and 4 know they are direct to video sequels) and the effects (even the early CGI by Phil Tippett studios, a forerunner to their excellent work on STARSHIP TROOPERS) hold up
On the stampede site, it says Kevin mentioned in an interview that he considered Tremors a low point in his career, which the producer/writer said hurt him very muchbut see, I just read an interview with him and he spoke highly of Tremors and mentions Tremors 2! Says his son thinks it's better than the first 🙂 HA! so do I.

There is a picture of Kevin Bacon's character at the beginning of the movie.

I know I read in one interview that supposedly at the time Kevin Bacon was filming
                Tremors
, he was walking with his pregnant wife on the sidewalk when he dropped down and yelled "I'm doing a movie about underground worms!" True, his CAREER at that point may have been at a low, but
                Tremors
is definitely a high point and I think a lot of modern film fans credit
                Tremors
as being one of his best films.
Maybe at the time Bacon felt it was a low point, but I think his feelings towards
                Tremors
has probably changed since the movie was completed. If he was even considering coming back for the sequel while also getting offers to do
                Apollo 13
with Tom Hanks and Ron Howard, he must have had good feelings towards the first one.
On a side note, apparently they're working on a new TV series about
                Tremors
with Kevin Bacon set to return as star and executive producer, and aside from returning after all his success up to this point Bacon's also stated on how he loves the practical effects.

Can't be too careful with all those weirdos running around.

He had to decide between this or Apollo 13 and was actually close to choosing Tremors 2, but dropped out once it became straight-to-video.
