Originally there was a subplot of Keaton planting a bomb on the boat, so he probably wanted to know how much time there was left before it would explode.
But with that cut, Keaton might just like to know at what time he was going to die.

It says so in the trivia section. I do have the dvd with commentary by the director and the writer, but I can't remember if they said anything about that.
