If this is underrated, then so is herpes.

People must be crazy NOT to like this film. I just watched it again for god knows how many times. It's still hasn't lost any power. 10/10.

Yeah, I don't understand these critics. I think its a great movie and valuable fiction, with its premise how the world could look like after losing the ice caps. Even if we know now, that in the ice caps is not enough water to let the sea level rise to this extent, its a fun movie to watch with beautiful sailing, underwater, and island scenes. I like it much more than Mad Max, which plays mostly in a desert.
            What I like:

            • the catamaran
            • the film music, especially in the opening scene
            • the crazy fights during sailing, they actually involve a lot of innovative thinking. I don't remember another film involving sailing yachts in fights. And the sailing scenes with the mariner's catamaran are just awesome.
            • the acting of Kevin Costner, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Dennis Hopper, Tina Majorino, (most other actors, too)
            • the beautiful nature in contrast to the old, monstrous oil tanker (Exxon Valdez) and the smokers
            • the story is also nice, with Enola finding her origin in the end
What I don't like, and this is a general critic on these end time movies, is the crappy outfit of the people and buildings (and ships in this case). In my opinion, we humans (most at least) would try to build something beautiful and keep it clean, even with low resources. But, I guess, that makes such movies more dramatic

I watched WW again on cable TV. I still love it no matter what others said about it. 10/10

Probably Waterworld is in my top 5 Movies Ever. The only slight drawback to me was Jeanne Tripplehorn. She just didn't strike me as a strong enough actor to work alongside Hopper (completely over the top bat s*&t crazy - my favorite Hopper mode!), Kostner, & young Tina Majorino. Best parts? Mariner's ingenuity, boat, gadgets and the enormous sets built on water. I love the scene where the hanging prisoner reminds Hopper that he promised not to shoot him if he 'talked'. Hopper's like, Oh, darn it, your'e right, I did promise & hands his gun to the smoker standing next to him telling him to 'take care of it'. All you can hear is a loud scream from the prisoner and loud 'Klang' of a bullet bouncing off a metal pendage of the ship. I can't tell you how many times my young kids reversed this scene over and over rolling on the floor laughing. It reminded them of why they loved 'Bugs Bunny Cartoons' lol Too many more things to list what I love about this movie. I think I've watched it at least 10 times

Definitely the most underrated movie ever. Its a really feelgood movie. A perfect movie to watch in the afternoon when you have a day off.

Absolutely! Pretty good post-apocalyptic movie, very underappreciated.
Boycott movies that involve real animal violence! (and their directors too)

It seems if a movie runs wildly over budget, the buzz always seems to flag it as a flop no matter how good it is and it'll never shake off the stink. Ishtar, John Carter, etc. And, I'm sure the movie is in the black at this point.
I can think of a dozen movies that were at the same level as this one that I enjoy just as much even with all their warts; like Independence Day. Hell, people love Transformers to death and I took the first 2 as a direct affront to my intelligence.

Look at the movies I gave 10 stars. Yep, that's right. I gave Waterworld 10 because it is the only movie I have seen where you have a true antihero. Guy hitting a little girl? Guy selling a women as a hooker for some papers? Guy being bad ass. Guy not getting all romantic? Guy not loved by everyone he meets? It has everything - and it's the only movie ever made that has all of these things.

I gave it 8 stars. It is a good movie and unfairly trashed. They wanted to bring Kostner down at his movie peak. Build them up, breakem down.

Saw waterworld 1995 and i just finished it again. It really has stood the test of time.
Actually i enjoyed it a lot more this time.
Costner is great and the little girl is charming and funny. The movie has good balance of action and humour.

Enjoyed this movie much more than I thought I would after watching it for the first time today. I honestly admit I had not taken the time out to watch this because of its reputation and will say that I was led astray. WW is not THE GODFATHER or anything like that but it kept my attention for two and a quarter hours when I thought my intelligence would be insulted the whole time. Glad to say I was wrong and happier to say I may have to purchase this one day.

I think the majority of the people who say it was a bad movie have never actually seen it, and only know it flopped in the box office. I saw it in the theater when it came out in '95 and loved it. I'm actually the only person I know other than the friend I was with, and my dad (I was 10) who saw it in theaters, so that's how bad it did. I bought it on VHS as soon as it came out and none of my friends nor myself could understand hay this movie wasn't popular the way Jurassic Park and Independence Day, which both came out around the same time, were.

The movie got screwed by Samuel Jackson and Fishbourne for rejecting the main villain parts, they could have saved this movie.

This movie is a classic, some of the most iconic sets and sequences in any action movie. Another movie like this will never happen again so I'm thankful this exists, an easy 9 for me. One of my favorites as a kid. This movie has lots of cool concepts even if it takes a lot of suspending your disbelief.
