Let's be real, suspension of disbelief is required to roll with this film. I wanted to get my hands on the Extended Cut but heard it's partly unfinished with regards to effects/editing etc. Watched the theatrical cut and I was amazed how fluidly (ignore the pun) entertaining the movie was after 20 years. Considering the mildly ridiculous plot the performances that really stood out were Tina Majorino and Kevin Costner. An hour into it I was amazed how entertaining I found these performances to be and was shocked by it. After seeing Mad Max Fury Road and the other Mad Max films I appreciated the ideas behind Waterworld that much more. So many of the minor characters the quirky trader for example were unusually entertaining to watch and reminded me heavily of the nature of the Mad Max films. Despite the production was a disaster you can tell the director(s) had a lot of fun with the actors' performances as well as the production design. It is an attention that I don't see as much of these days. It definitely had a unique style at the time but it still seems like it knew what it was trying to be despite most audiences disagreeing. There are some glaring errors in the film (the "mirror" line for example) but with mature eyes I was amazed how well the theatrical cut actually flows considering how hard I heard it was to cobble together.
