Many great movies have certain scenes where finally you sortof just KNOW that this is a great movie. Before it comes you enjoy it, but not much more than that. Personal examples would be just when you see the first T-Rex escape in Jurassic Park or in 2001 - A Space Odyssey, right at the moment when the astronauts are about to take a picture at the digsite on the moon when the loud beep-sound is heard. Moments like that makes your hairs stand on end.
In Waterworld, that moment must be after these words were uttered: "You wanna see Dryland? Ill show you Dryland" and then they descend to what the audience believe is just the bottom of the ocean, but as the Mariner and Helen goes deeper and deeper you realize that its actually a HUGE freaking city submerged in water. That scene is what made this film a masterpiece to me, even though one of the final scenes where the Mariner discovers that he is not made for land is a serious contender.
So, what is your "cementing scene" in this movie? If you have one that is.

I loved it when Helen singlehandedly wrecked the trimaran or however it's spelled and Enola smarts off at Kevin and he cuts off their hair. Then they sit there and he starts to climb up a ladder and asks if they said something and they both mumble no. Lots of gems in this movie.

Yep. That's when I was hooked. The scene with the reveal that the dirt came from
the underwater city was awesome the first time I saw it because I didn't expect it.
And of course any Dennis Hopper scene was good.
