I was thinking that as well. She looked like she should've been the grandmother to the children rather than the mother. Karen is one of my favorite actresses so this is one of the better entries of the series for her presence alone, but it was unusual to see them try to pass her off as the mother of the children when she looked a bit too old.

In real life, Karen was 57. Her character didn't necessarily have to be that age. She lived and worked on a farm all her life which could age you quickly. If the boy was 12 then she could've been 40 when she had him.
I probably wouldn't have watched this had Karen Black not been in it.
