No, it's not a children's book (alhtough there is a version out with an edited version to make the story far more suitable for kids) but the original book is by the screenwriter Charles Pogue and very adult minded. He complained a lot about the changes that were made to his story to make it more suitable for a broader audience. For example in the book Einon rapes Kara, which is in the book clearly refuseted when she states that she is a virgin in the next scene at the village. There is also more emphasis on the characters of Bowen and Einon (especially him)

The book is not only a novelization of DragonHeart but it's based on Charles Pogue's screenplay for the film. It has scenes and characters that were cut from the film and none of the childish stuff that was added.

The book is a novelization of the film, so, rather than the movie being based off of the book, the book was based off of the movie. Anyway it's written by Charles Edward Pogue and titled the same as the film.
