A majority of voters blame President Trump for rising prices, according to a recent poll, marking a possible midterm warning sign for Republicans.
The cost of living is top of mind for Americans one year out from the 2026 election, which is set to serve as a major referendum on Trump's second-term agenda.
And as voters head to the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots in mayoral, gubernatorial and other races, Democratic candidates have honed their messages around affordability.
A majority of U.S. adults say they're spending more money on their groceries and utilities than they were last year, according to a Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll conducted late last month.
Some seven in 10 Americans say they're spending more on groceries compared to last year. That comes as federal food assistance hangs in limbo amid a government shutdown and food banks brace for unprecedented need.
Nearly nine in ten Democrats said they were spending more at the grocery store. While fewer Republicans agreed, a majority (52%) still said they were spending more money.
Fifty-nine percent of U.S. adults said they were spending more on utilities, while just 6% said they were spending less.
Among all U.S. adults, 59% said they blamed Trump a great deal or a good amount for the current rate of inflation.
Among Republicans, 20% blamed Trump a good or great deal. Another 48%, when asked how much they blamed Trump, chose "not much."
White House spokesperson Kush Desai told Axios in a statement that the Trump administration's policies have "dramatically lowered the prices of household essentials like eggs and gas."
He added, "As these policies continue to take effect, Americans can rest assured that Joe Biden's inflation crisis is firmly in the rearview mirror."
The Consumer Price Index showed prices rising at a slower pace than expected in September, according to a delayed Bureau of Labor Statistics report.
But Americans are still reporting pocketbook strain. And as Axios' Margaret Talev and Neil Irwin report, high food prices disproportionately impact the working class.
Some staple goods that people frequently buy, like beef and eggs, have experienced particularly sharp spikes at various times this year. And while utility prices fell in September, they're up nearly 12% over the past year.
Fifty-eight percent of U.S. adults said they believed imposing tariffs hurts the economy, a sentiment shared by 88% of Democrats and 23% of Republicans.
Axios' Pete Gannon reports that tariffs have made pricing strategy a trickier balancing act as companies race to offset tariffs.
The economy — and the key word, affordability — appears to be a central part of Democrats' election messaging.
Affordability has been the dominant issue of progressive mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani's campaign that dazzled young voters, and the economy has been a major focus of Abigail Spanberger's and Mikie Sherrill's gubernatorial runs.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) predicted in a recent interview with Semafor that affordability will drive midterm results: "I can't see into the future, but I see Republicans losing the House if Americans are continuing to go paycheck-to-paycheck," she said.
Nearly half of respondents in a recent Axios Vibes survey by The Harris Poll said it was harder to afford groceries compared to a year ago.
Harris Poll CEO John Gerzema said that respondents "don't feel like things are changing fast enough. This is going to be a significant issue for the president."

      Inflation is at 2.92%.
      Significantly lower than under Biden.
Most of these higher costs we are paying are because of the rampant inflation under Biden.
The prices went way up and they are not going to go back down.
Hamburgers used to be 15 cents, too.
Inflation didn't start to decrease until the GOP took over the House again.
Trump is still trying to fix what Biden messed up.
Letting in millions of illegals also helped suppress wage growth.
      Good job, liberals.
And after all that, liberals are still trying to blame Trump.

Go back and look at the month by month inflation rates under Biden.
They started really going up several months into his presidency and didn't start to go down until the GOP took the House.
But you are complaining about inflation today? LOL

                Of course.
Inflation just happened to really go up under Democrat leadership and just happened to go back down under Republican leadership.
                Pure coincidence! LOL

It went up under a Democratic president. It went down under a Democratic president. It continued to drop a bit under a Republican president. Now it's going up under a Republican president.
Meanwhile the rest of the world was going through inflation problems from 21-23 too. As far as I can tell Biden was never president of Europe or Latin America or the other continents. Why don't you do about 30 seconds of research and look at the global chart

It went up under a Democrat president and HOUSE.
It only went down when the GOP took control of the spending.

In the US it peaked in June 2022 at a little over 9%. Over the next 4 months leading up to the midterm election it dropped 1.5% then continued dropping for the next 2 years or so, following the trend it was already on.

You can look it up yourself.
The inflation rate started going up about seven months into Biden's presidency and went up and up and up.
Until in 2023 when the GOP took the House and that is when it started going down and continued to decrease.
The Dems increased spending to cure inflation.
Which is about the time inflation really took off.

None of you have ever even attempted to answer this question: Why did the entire rest of the world have the same inflation problems at that same time? You always conveniently ignore that part. Was Biden in charge of the other countries too?

Because the Dems needed to pay off their political benefactors and, after the covid crisis had largely been dealt with, you decided to spend and spend and spend and spend and spend.
Almost immediately and that was on top of the spending Trump did because he had a China virus to deal with. The one you liberals swore never came out of the Wuhan lab. The one you liberals said science proved was from a cave and ended up in bat soup. LOL
How much money did you think Biden spent on green energy initiatives that went nowhere? About a trillion dollars? Sure, it made some of his supporters rich but it also diminished the value of the dollar and that was at a time when we had already had to spend a lot on China virus relief.
