The two scenes are back to back: Carl tries to get a picture on the TV and Marge watches TV before telling her sleeping husband that she's going to bed. Both scenes are brief. Why were these scenes shown?

It was a clever way to cut between the two scenes. Also the TV picture comes on, and image is close-up footage of a beetle who captures his prey, a worm, and then hauls it away. I think it's an apt metaphor for the kidnappers who are some kind of lower life form, without heart or conscience. Then you realize the image is on Margie's TV. As she watches the insect, perhaps she starts to realize (if only subconsciously) what kind of people she's dealing with.

A +. Timely and spot on.
Hopefully we can all learn to be better people by watching Fargo.
I'm sorry baby, I had to crash that Honda.

That's my absolute favorite scene in the film.
Mainly, how the music plays as Carl bangs the TV, while Gaear just sits there, staring at the TV (or at nothing).
          It's very poetic, and meditative.
Does that particular scene mean anything? What was going on in Gaear's mind?
          Was he reevaluating his life?
          Lol

            No.
Gaear is watching static on his TV. He is mesmerized by static because ..he's a
            SOMNAMBULANT IDIOT.
He is an insect. Or maybe
            He
            IS
            the wood chipper.
