Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Jerry Maguire

I read a few posts on this site saying Jerry really didn't love Dorothy.
I think most of you are really missing the point.
Jerry was an empty soul. This was pointed out at his bachelor party. He cannot love anyone because he thinks of himself as a fake. You see the women he dated making fun of him because he cannot say " I love you" and mean it.
When the kid in the beginning told Jerry " F You" Jerry finally realized that everything in his life was shallow and he was nothing more then a Con-artist. He wanted to better himself and make a turn in his life. Hence the mission-statement.
During the course of the film, Jerry and Rod's relationship changed into a real friendship. Jerry now had a client that he did indeed care about. This was one of the major changes that Jerry truly wanted.
I truly believe that Jerry did love Dorothy from the beginning. He was unable to understand why someone so genuine like Dorothy could actually love him. When Jerry and Dorothy split up, it was because Jerry still did not really believe in himself.
Finally when Rod, caught the touchdown, did the dance, etc. Jerry finally knew that everything was going to be OK. It was in that moment when everything was ok, it was still not ok. How could anything be ok without the woman he truly loved ( Dorothy ).
Dorothy said something like, " I love him! I love him for the man he wants to be. And I love him for the man he almost is. "
Jerry became exactly what she was talking about at the football game. Jerry knew that he was a changed man. He knew that he was worthy to accept Dorothy's love. Most importantly, Jerry truly loved Dorothy. This was clear when he told Dorothy he loved her. ( Not just because he said it ) It was the way that he said it. This was the first time in Jerry's life he truly said " I Love You"

Good points. Can't disagree there. I feel as if Jerry was just drifting from moment to moment but it was not until Dorothy and her kid found him that he began to reel in. He still had very little self esteem in himself. He thought his career was finished when Tidwell went down. When he saw Tidwell rise and dance, his career clicked but something was still missing. He didn't know what (or who) that something was until Tidwell gets a call from his wife, who he tells how much he loves her. That is when Jerry's life clicks.
      Very good movie.
