IMO, this movie was conceived as a totally separate project, with no reference whatsoever to The Lawnmower Man and with Matt Frewer as a generic cybervillain. Some time during pre-production, someone must have thought that many more people would be eager to pay to see a sequel to The Lawnmower Man, so they just called Matt Frewer's character "Jobe" and recast Austin O'Brien as Peter.

          Its entirely possible, and not uncommon;
          Die Hard With A Vengance
being a famous (and contemporary with regards to this film) example of a script being altered to suit a franchise.
As for LM2; lame movie but I liked how the villain kept harping on about "Liberals" and "Hypocritical Democrats". That was funny.

I think all the Die Hard movies started as standalone scripts that got bought and had McClane inserted to make them Die Hards. Happens all the time. Hellraiser 5-8. Starship Troopers.

PapaT_86 I think hit the nail right on the head there. As bad as all the films you mentioned there are, I still enjoy them all, except starship troopers 3, I don't recall liking that one too much.

People that say it is crap obviously don't get the film at all!

Also somehow between the end of the 1st and beginning of the second movies, the world became all futuristic and gritty looking with futuristic cars and tram systems above the roadways. It makes no sense

There was a problem with continuity. In the first one Jobes body has been destroyed and he was turned into energy. In Jobes War he was a living human. The passing of time was not continuous with the first since Jobe was described as a man in his late 20s the same age as he appears in lawnmower man 1. Also he was found after some catostrophic incident implying the movie was starting were Lawnmower man 1 left off. So of course the futurist cars and trains don't make sense since not much time has passed.

Because of this mis-titled piece of trash, we will never have a true Lawnmower Man sequel.
It could have been a good run with another movie or 2 based on the "real" Jobe from the first movie taking over the web or something.
Shameful to market this crap as a sequel to a fairly watchable movie.
                          ..
                          ..
                          ..
William Gibson really needs a good lawyer with 1000+ works ripped off from his creations.

I'm at home sick, and noticed this movie on our shelf (some 5 dollar dvd deal someone bought) and watched it. I kindof enjoyed it. Stupid and cheesy most of the time, but very entertaining and lots of action (even though it wasn't the best action). I was surprised at the budget value, too. I've never seen Lawnmower Man 1
Were any of the shots at the start, where the screen goes 4:9 (if you have the widescreen dvd) from the original Lawnmower Man?

don't worry my people. i, the greatest film maker who ever lived is planning a sequel to this called
                              Lawnmower man 3:
                              alternate dimensions
i will somehow make the second film make sense. also i'm not ignoring this movie because i like the idea of people having to watch this piece of crap and then being extremely surprised that part 3 is one of the greatest movies all time. it will be the first time a third part will succed the previous.
my coming will be 2012: the new decade of film. the diamond age of film. the age that follows the worst.
i just watched this movie last night. did you notice how it seems to be a work of art compared to movies like transformers and harry potter?
the worst movies before the 0s are pieces of gold compared to the greatest movies of the 0s.
as we draw nearer to the cataclsymic dec 22 2012 movies will get worse. but when the world is reborn with me in the center of the black hole of this galaxy you will see movies that will blow your minds away.
for there is a new director in town. his name is johnny.
                              where are the white women?
