because is a renny harlin film, one of the worst directors in our time.he just throws sand to the audience eyes hoping that will take effect in the box-office.

Did this one really do it bad at the box office? I remember when I was 12, and this one hit the theatres in Norway, this movie was on every actionfans lips. Unfortunately, it was rated 18 in Norway so I had to wait for the video. But I remember this one being amongst the cream de la cream of actionfilms at that time Still love it.
As for Harlin, he have'nt made anything good since this one and Cutthroat, but his older flicks like Cliffhanger, Die hard 2, Prison and ANOES4: The Dream Master are good quality-time substitutes

Wow. I'm surprised 😮 I thought this film was a huge success. I remember renting it many times back in '96-'97 (when it was released on video here in Norway). It's one of those films I remember clearly as if I saw it yesterday. I think it's been a decade since I last saw it.

Well the film made a decent amount of money overseas for it became somewhat profitable, plus it has a cult audience at the Home Video section.
Anway, this and "Jingle All The Way" are the two films I always watch around Christmas time. Cliche and cheesy as hell, but man its a lot of fun to watch.
Shane Black is one of my fave. screenwriters too, and he's top notch here.

It tanked because it's too real and because it reads like a PNAC manual. Paul Wolfowitz probably consulted on it to provide the intimate details on the references to simulated waterboarding.

I think that it was a really cool/good action movie! Long kiss goodnight is much better than the action movies today.and i don't know why it sucked in BoxOffice

It was good but the most annoying scene for me was when she miraculously put on her ice skates under seconds
I hated that scene! So unrealistic.
I mean the entire premise is unrealistic but there are some things that just down right hokey.

It basically came out at the wrong timeafter CUTTHROAT ISLAND had destroyed a studio and the reputations of Davis and Harlin.

I bet people are running back to this movie in droves now given the fact that Hollywood just wants to remake things or do comic book movies.
Whether this movie is 100 percent original or not is beside the point. It's original enough that it's a good amount of fun. It doesn't change the world, but it's FUN. Plus, Renny 'I love BOOM!' Harlin has always made fun, silly, comic booky style action films without adapting an actual comic book. Doesn't that deserve a little bit of praise?

It has a pretty decent rating on Rotten Tomatoes (71%), so something tells me that has has gotten a little more love over the years. I don't know why it bombed though, I thought it was a fantastic action film.
It knew what it was. It was balls to the wall action and had some hilarious dilogue.

Lol I can't believe this has 8 pages of discussion. Kind of cool. I love this movie and would choose to watch it over so many movies that have won best picture of the last 40 years. It is what it is, an action movie that is far fetched and totally outrageous. So many action movies are like that and some make a lot of money and some don't. This is one that I watch a few times a year since it came out. Totally mindless fun for me. At least it helps me forget about all the idiots I deal with daily for a few hours.

It's always been a mystery to me why it wasn't more commercially successful. I reckon it ticks all the boxes. Interesting to read that it is both Renny Harlin's and Sam Jackson's favourite film.

I get a huge kick out of this film. I saw it three times on the big screen - that's very atypical for me. Naturally, I own it on DVD. Geena Davis & Samuel L. Jackson, though both excellent here, had uneven film histories at the time TLKG was released, & that probably affected the box office. I don't recall what the competition in theaters was at the time, but that may also have been a factor. Lastly, it seemed to me that this movie could have been better-promoted. I may be wrong about that - I don't quite trust my memory about it, but it was my impression, when it came out.

Because it came from husband/wife team Geena Davis and Renny Harlin the year after they made Cutthroat Island. That movie was horrible, and one of the biggest bombs of the decade. So when this came out a year later, there was no audience trust there and the movie suffered unnecessarily as a result. If this film had been released before Cutthroat Island, it would have performed much, much differently at the box office.

I thought this film was meant to be over-the-top as possibly a cult film. It was so bad that it was good.
