Kevin Bacon's Performance.

Kevin Bacon was great, but it's not that difficult a role. In the history of movies there have been plenty of great sadistic guards. Ted Levine might make a pretty good one, because of his torturing voice. No, I think the real excellence was due to Ron Eluard and Billy Crudup's facial acting the night of the Nokes murder. Those two guys stole the show with that one. Kevin didn't have to do much, but take his punishment.

Always thought the two most memorable evil characters performances that struck a chord with me were Ralph Fienes in "Schindler's List" and Tim Roth in "Rob Roy"; not sure how I forgotten Bacon's performance in this oneespecially when he makes the kids eat off the floor.

exactly, he's so scary and convincing and intimidating in that scene. in mean this guy is scary. he's so in character in this film. and he's so versatile.
you watch him in this and then you watch him in the big picture and you realize he has a lot of range as an actor. those characters are completely different in every way and he plays both characters perfectly and so powerfully.

I agree he was amazing in thisdefinitely his best performance.but one thing bugged me: his accent changes severely several times. He goes from New Yorker to Surfer Dude to redneck (later years).

Almost a year later
Kevin Bacon seems to be good at playing the role of the bad/sadistic guy.
Sleepers, The River Wild, Hollow Man, White Water Summer.
Also not too bad at playing the good guy. As fluffy as they are, I also liked him in The Air Up There and, of course, Footloose. -

Today, as I watched the movie, I thought "Boy, no one really gives Kevin Bacon the credit he deserves." I was lost in his performance.
His and the others in the movie - I love when I can get lost in a story, the bonus is when an actor can draw me in. To have the entire cast pull me into the movie was fantastic.
I'm just shy that way -

finally, i find a thread that praises bacon and not slam him. kevin is one of the best actors in the world. his style and deversity are incredible. however, i feel that while this was one of his best preformances; his absolute best without a doubt, was in fact Murder in the First with Gary Oldman and Christian Slater, but yet again.he got nothing for it.

I came to this thread to point out KB's brilliant performance in Murder in the First, a good but not great movie. Since you have beaten me to it I will just add my agreement with your opinions of that role and of his talents in general.
He is consistently good, or better, and can make an otherwise mediocre movie, such as this one, watchable. He has quite a few roles in good to excellent movies as well. Mystic River and Tremors come to mind. But you already mentioned diversity didn't you?
