I'm from Maine and I thought the accents were horrible LOL they are so overdone. That tends to be the case in Stephen King movies as well. It kind of grates on ya. We don't all speak with such a thick thick accent. Most of us don't but alot of the older people do. It really depends on what parts of Maine you grew up in I suppose or how your parents spoke I suppose. I deffinatly I agree that those who DO have the accent it is alot different than a Boston accent. People who have never been to New England think the Boston and Maine accent are the same but they are not at all.

I only just started watching this movie a few minutes ago (up to the part where Percy & Joe go for a ride to the next town) and already I love it! I looged onto imdb during a break just because I love to read about films I'm watching. Initially, I thought"Gosh what horrible southern accents!" as I am from North Caroina, traveled quite a bit, but somehow never been to Maine and had no idea they spoke like that. I would have guessed they have a northern/yankee (no offense) accent, so it is interesting to read that most who have written to this forum think the accents are accurate. Can't wait to see the rest of the movie.
Insanity is: repeating the same action - over and over - yet expecting a different result.

It's almost as bad as when some actors attempt the "Bahston" accentslike in "The Departed"(Martin Sheen, especially)
This is a logic free zone:
Use of logic will be met with uncomfortable silences

I am so glad to see someone spoke up on this thread. I live in Maine and we don't sound like that at all; even the older generations that have thick Maine accents. I thought there were either European or Austrialian at first. This is probibly the worst Maine accent I have ever heard!! I can't believe people thought it was accurate!!!

I am so sure that lesson had nothing to do with whips handcuffs Alan Rickman or any combo of the 3

Thank GOD..I was begining to think I was the only sane person around LOL. We do NOT sound like that. I agree about the Boston accent as well. And can you beleive some people claim the Boston and Maine accent are the same?~!

Well, there is something to be said about perception. I can't judge how 'accurate' those Gilead accents are, because I've never been there, much less stepped foot in Maine.
Maybe to your ears you don't sound like the characters in 'Spitfire', which is fine. I just found them to be charming.
Canadians will argue til they're blue in the face that they don't say 'hoose' and 'aboot' for 'house' and 'about'and it's partially truebut I've lived in Canada for many a year, are there are certain regional peculiarities that would cause an outsider to perceive that's how those words are being spoken.
                Down with spoilers!

I know what you mean. I mean don't get me wrong, there ARE Mainers with a thick accent, they DO say things like "ayuh" and "yessuh" and things like that, just not as stereotypical as in this movie LOL. There are certain words that I say like a Mainer, like "Huspitul" and "Arnt"(instead of Aunt. I hate it when I catch myself saying that ugh)but for the most part I don't have the accent. I went to school with alot of kids that DID have accents and always thought it was strange how some of us spoke with virtually no accent and others sounded like they just fell off a Lobster boat.

Okay, so I am from Maine as well. And I have family from all different regions in this state, many with thick Maine accents. And the accents in the film are the worst rendition of a Maine accent I've ever heard! So overdone, and in some places completely off the wall and unlike any inflection I've heard from a Mainer. And so, I'd just like to say, it is not that we just don't hear ourselves the way others do, it truly is the most ridiculous attempt at a Maine accent ever!
As others before me have said, it's nothing against the movie, which was beautiful.

They're far from the "worst rendition of a Maine accent".
I think that most of them made decent attempts, except for Marcia Gay Harden's - hers was pretty bad.
They're not going to get it perfect or even close enough to satisfy a local - but the movie's not really about the accents.
