This is what my husband thinks when he watches the show.
I could totally see their relationship as romantic. They are deeply emotionally connected.
OTOH, is assuming that spin on their relationship cheapening it?
Discuss!
(I bring this up without any agenda and not trying to disturb anyone's image of the show, but thought it was a fair point to mull over). -

I doubt it. I saw their relationship as a simple friendship; though something about Jane was implied in Is it Fall Yet (or was it Is it College Yet). It probably wouldn't have worked out anyway.

No. They are best friends and both clearly portrayed as being straight. Jane went out with several guys, more outspoken about her attraction to them, and Daria being long-fixated on Trent and later Tom.
I'm not sure why so many assume otherwise about them. If they dated around more like the Fashion Club did, always obsessively dating different boys, would there still be that assertion? I doubt it, personally, as no one ever speculates if any of them (Quinn, Sandi, Stacy and Tiffany) were gay. -

Yes, I know that.but most closeted people I knew in high school dated people of the other sex. My senior prom date was gay. I didn't know that for 10 years. I was so relieved when I found out because I thought I had hurt his feelings by not being more into him after prom.
Good point that of course any of the characters could have been gay. But anyway - things have changed a LOT in 20 years, but a significant number of the "misfits" I knew in high school turned out to be gay, fewer among the "popular" crowd, at least in my high school.
AND PS - lest I be misunderstood - I grew up in a severely homophobic and intolerant environment, so it would have been extremely difficult to be an openly gay teen. I think it's somewhat better now in many places, but still pretty hard in many parts of the US. -

There's just a few too many cases of them being genuinely interested in boys for me to think either was secretly gay.
I think they just weren't overly aggressive about them like Quinn and Co. were.
I made a thread awhile back that no one replied to so I think I deleted it (lolz) that I think it was implied that Joey, Jeffy and Jamie might be gay, or maybe Jeffy. I think there was a credit scene where they were getting married (it drives me bonkers that I can't remember which episode/movie that was in), along with Jeffy's paper on Romeo and Juliet about Mercutio having a thing for Romeo. Jeffy also tells Quinn that Jamie is a really bad kisser but then defensively exclaims that he heard it from a girl. There was one other thing I can't remember.
But that could be total nonsense, as I think the Daria/Jane speculation is.
So then I will say anything is possible but I personally don't see it with either of those characters. -

Fair enough! It was my hubby who first mentioned it, that made me think. Their friendship was certainly very intense, but could just be the isolation of that school.
Ha ha - Joey, Jeffy and Jamie - hadn't thought about them, but that is a good question. -

Yes, I agree with that about the school being isolated.
The guys in this show were usually portrayed as burnouts, dumb jocks, snobs, jerks, creeps (Upchuck certainly was funny though, ha), etc I think there just weren't that many great choices, for female friends as well besides Jodie but she was too idealistic for them, and they naturally just found solace in each other.
They kinda were all the other had for a true friendship. -

But that's the thing.back in the 90s there were virtually NO gay characters anywhere on television.and we know that they are ~10% of the population. Luckily things have changed, somewhat. But if you grew up anytime before the millenial generation, where on TV did you ever get to see someone who was like you?
Anyway - not to beat a dead horse but just felt like saying that. I am glad times have changed. -

Oh yeah I have to agree with the above poster. Of course if this came on MTV today I'm sure Daria and Jane would be a couple. In the 90s I noticed most celebs and people kept sexual life private you had to guess if they were gay or not. Today in the 00s celebs and people are coming out left and right saying they gay, lesbian and then President is approving gay marriage.

Gays do not make 10% of the population. That lie has been long debunked. They make about 2%. Anyways I'm sick of hearing about gays period. Of course if this show was made today, MTV (of all places) would force gay characters on the show like they do all of their shows now. Which is why I'm glad DARIA isn't on today.

Despite of what some might say gay characters are usually found on pseudo-comedy to be laughing stock.Nothing important and serious or anything and if so,well,that makes no difference.They are there only to take advantage of gay(or pseudo gay)people,after all,they represent a bussiness oportunity too.
People cant see how useless validation is,maybe some day.
Oh,and Daria is one of the greatest shows ever and nothing will ruin it at all,not even vacuous speculation. -

Agree with much that you've said: gay characters are meant as extra amusment, or to be otherwise "colorful" or to show how "progressive" the show is. How about some three-dimensional gay characters who are just real people?

I never liked when people over-analyze things like these like a character's sexuality.
But to answer your question I'd say "No!"
Jane's character was meant to be one of the few (or only) people Daria relates to. Making them lovers would just be messy.
Also, the show seemed like it's purpose was to be authentic and address social issues. I think if they wanted to make her gay they would've done it at the time.

Every day I wonder what Daria would be like in the present day. Her character was such a embodiment of ennui and cognitive dissonance in the face of the era of McMansions and Supermodels. What would she be like in a more politically charged time? Angrier? More likely to fit in? What would her politics consist of? (I don't think she had any particular politics per se, she was just anti-conformity) -

I mean if they remade the show they could make Daria whatever they wanted to but I don't know that Daria was ever gay or bisexual and we were pretty much out right told that Jane wasn't either because she was questioning her sexuality at one point and she made up her mind that she shouldn't let others tell her who she is. I think even if either of them were gay they certainly wouldn't be together because thats just not how they were they were kindred spirits but not of the romantic sort.

yes, you are right! The show completely stands as it is. It just made me think - in the 90s, no way would a show on MTv had a female lesbian character as the main character in a story about high school - it just wouldn't have been done.
