The Amistad crew were northamericans trying to speak Spanish. And I only say "trying" for a reason. Awful accent. Awful cast. Awful film.

Yeah! Reminds me of when they cast all those non-Scandinavians for the show Vikings and speaking ENGLISH and not even attempting to speak Old Norse language! Or when they didn't even care to cast native Russian speakers to play Russians in the show The Americans. Or when they didn't even care to cast a native Spanish speaker for The Impossible. They got some Brit to play "Maria". Awful accent.

Although I think this film is awesome, I cringed when hearing the Spanish accents. Why would Spielberg being such a meticulous director wouldn't bother to cast native Spaniards to play Spaniards. Or at the very least ask the Mexican, Cubans and Puerto-rican actors to fake accurate Castillian accents, I assure you is not that difficult.
In the movie "Pam's labyrinth" Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro casted a full Spaniard cast to play native Spanish characters. That is attention to detail.
Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained? Is this not why you are here?

He cast two British actors as U.S. presidents, another for a district court judge and another for the prosecutor. Why aren't you moaning about that?

Nobody cares. It has no impact on the story whatsoever. Ya know, I never hear Americans *****ing when a foreigner does an American accent. So tell me, what is the genuine source of your angst?

Well, back when Amistad was made, we didn't have the same level of nonsense about so-called 'White washing' as we do now. To get big Hollywood movies to be made, you have to convince people to finance the movie with a lot of money, and unless you have well known Hollywood actors in those movies, the people who finance movies are unwilling to do so. A cast of unknown foreign actors just doesn't draw enough people through the cinema doors. If you are unable to understand this, you are incredibly nave.
