Was Jon Voight THAT bad?

This movie has become famous for Jon Voight bad acting which is hard to believe. I'm a huge Jon Voight fan by the way. I haven't seen this movie yet but how can he be THAT bad in the film.

Well, he was "bad good". Whether he was being intentionally nutso or not, I do not know. But the performance he gave was hysterical, at any rate. You should check it out for yourself.

Lucky him, huh? I'm betting it was in his contract.
But don't forget the scene where he wakes up briefly, just in time to save the day at a key point before passing back out.
It really is a great movie, it just gets funnier over time.

Yeah.
I actually enjoyed Voigt's performance. He was really funny. I don't know if it was intentional or not, but he was funny.
The rest of the movie was so cheesy though. Where else can you see a snake eat someone, then spit him back out for no apparent reason? Also, I like it when there is a background description of anacondas in the beginning of the movie as if the facts were real.
Finally, I loved the hopelessly cheesy music. -

I specifically looked up this movie just to see who would mention jon voight's brilliant unintentional 'overact' of the decade.you guys are dead onit's so bad that it brings another dimension to the moviethink Penn in 'Casualties of War'another great exampledecent actorbut overacting nonetheless.
the simple answer to ur question is 'YES'he was that bad, but i think it's unanimous that we all enjoyed it for some weird reasoncome onwhen Voight is starring at Lopez with his head tilted back thinking lascivious thoughtsi know u can't help but to laugh or show one of ur friendsits completely ridiculous.

I thought snakes don't digest bones very well do they? And if that someone was a mammal, it was pretty accurate and no make-belief. -

I personally feel this movie is a testament to Jon Voight's excellent acting ability. Only a true actor can take a script made of pure beep and stand there in front of the camera and work it as if it were gold. Everything about this movie was horrible in my opinion except his performance. He knew this part was crap, but he put as much into it as any of his roles. That's the mark of a professional as far as I'm concerned.
On another note, I just saw the sequel. Frighteningly enough it was actually a better movie than this (not that that's difficult to achieve; it was still pretty bad). But there were no standout performances like Voight's in this one. -

What is so mind-numbing is how Voight was singled out by criticsI'm talking mainly about Siskel and Ebert hereas being great in this film. They both gave the movie thumbs up, and I've choked on my rancor ever since. The movie was stupid from beginning to end, not scary, and not funny. Voight's performance just makes a bad film bizarre. But it could have worked. Look at Holes, a movie where Voight does something similar with his character and it works but it's also in a much better film that is actually supposed to be funny.

Jon Voigts performance as the Paraguayan should be recognised as one his most defining performances. This was a good film to begin with anyway, I dont care what people say. Voigts performance elevates the whole narrative. That combined with competent film-making provides the film with a very sinister and tense atmosphere. Better than this modern crap 2dy like The Grudge which is truly s***.
Classic Film with memorable performances. Otherwise people wouldn't still be talking about it. -

I agree. Voight's performance was really good. Everyone I know praised it and hated him( being that he played the bag guy good). I didnt know much about him. This was the first time I saw him and thought as others he elevated the film and made me like him because he did what it took and had a I dont care attitude. Like others I think his performance was the best one. I dont think another actor couldve pulled it off. The only thing is that only now did I know he was a paraguayanian back then I wasnt really sure. I dont think he looks like one or entirely acts like one but he sure made it fun.

I think this is the only time I have agreed with Roger Ebert on anything if he said Vought was awesome in this movie. 100% correct. People who can't sit there and enjoy Vought's performance in this movie are people without brains or souls.

I don't think it was bad acting - I think it was camp acting - he knew this movie was what it was - a "B" movie and he played his role for all its worth. Think of all the cheesy 50's and 60's sci-fi and horror movies and he perfectly played his role with tongue firmly in cheek. He was a true scene stealer and I think you need to watch it to appreciate it

He was easily the best part of this movie (which I enjoyed!). He saw the movie for what it was, and didn't take himself too seriously. Scene stealer? I'd say movie stealer!

Anaconda is one of the rare higher grade creature features.
