Yeah, it was a lot out blood. But keep in mind that the bedding was white, and even a little blood would have really stood out in stark contrast. I'd think that someone with Martha's knowledge of breeding and foaling would have known how to stitch and pack her up to slow or stop the bleeding.
I think that the births we see on tv are pretty sanitized so that all we see are the sweet parts. I had two children, and was pretty shocked at how much blood and other fluids were involved. I think Helen's delivery was pretty normal.
