No the theater version was actually the same ending as in the DVD. Atleast the version I saw and I saw it the weekend it came out in 1998. However I will say this, I seem to remember the birth scene being longer and more torture for Gwyneth Paltrow's character. For some reason it just seems so shorter on the DVD. Maybe it was just the big screen to television transfer though.

I, too, have that draft script of the film and it is different. I would have liked to have seen the earlier conception to some degree, but I also think it would have been highly more theatrical and unrealistic - mother-in-law and daughter-in-law running at each other with shards of glass, shrieking, etc., - and I think ultimately they chose wisely to go back and refilm the climax. It was a much more powerful way to get back at Martha - by not letting her into the family anymore and selling her house. Ok, so maybe it was less "exciting" to those who wanted to see a big climactic brawl, but dramatically speaking and character speaking, it was much more true to the overall story and much more devastating to the "villain", Martha. So in the end I am glad they went with the climax they did. If they had gone by the script I had, it would have stepped dangerously over the edge into actually being over the edge.

Thank you for posting this. I have watched the trailer several times and was disappointed that such "exciting" scenes were edited out. I was wondering how the original story went. Thanks for letting us know!

I saw the film's originally filmed ending around the time of the movie's theatrical release. In it, Jessica Lange's character dies in the barn fire after brawling with Paltrow. It was far more down-beat than the re-shot finale. From what I remember, I liked the fire ending better, but apparently audiences at test screenings did not.

So is there no DVD version WITH the scenes like the final brawl between Helen and Ms. Barring?
I never saw the movie in theaters, but have had the DVD for years, and just now watched the trailer - and was super disappointed at what I saw the movie that I had been watching DID NOT include. -

Is that all that happened in the Alt. Verison? Because there are shots of a body being brought down the house stairs, as well as Jackson finding the necklace while standing outside an Ambulance. It gave me the impression that in the orignal cut, Helen died during the birth and then Jackson found the necklace on her. At least that's what the impression I got from watching to the trailer.
