What do Paltrow and Lange think about this?

One of my favorite bad movies. I saw it in the theatre with a friend of mine, and we both laughed at how horrible it was, but somehow, I always watch it when it's on TV. I also think there are more goofs than IMDB reports. I always remember thinking that the editing was pretty poorly done. More than that, how is Paltrow up and about the day after her horrible labor, looking just as skinny as before?

Part of the problem with this movie was the extensive editing and reshoots done to make it PG-13. The movie was shelved for nearly a year before it was finally released. I don't blame the poor editing on the director, I blame it on the studio. As a director, there is only so much you can do.
As for the actresses reactions, it is true that, to this date, Gwyneth has yet to see the final film. I've read the original script and, while not brilliant, is light years better than this film. All in all though, it's still a bit of a guilty pleasure for me.

Lange referred to it as "a piece of sh*t" in an interview. The screenplay was revised several times during filming and there were many, many reshoots and the end result is quite different from the film the actors signed for. It was originally titled "Kilronan" and was more of a complex psychological thrilled about a mother who was incapable of cutting the apron strings. No matter what actors say they know when the film is a stinker and Lange and Paltrow are smart and savvy ladies. I feel sorry for them both for having this stinker on their resumes.

Yes I agree Jessica Lange is like Joan Crawford on acid in this movie - it's the only thing she could do is camp it up. This is just the kind of laid-on-with-a-trowel unsubtle melodrama that I thought had gone out with the ark. The only thing giving it class is the marvellous Nina Foch. It looks like most of it is overdubbed too. Not the worst by a long shot but a bit of a crummy movie by any standards.

I also have read an early draft titled Kilronan and it's quite different in many parts but similar and sometimes exactly like the film in other parts.
The truth is scripts change all during production, edits happen, studio decisions are made (particularly on a film by a director with not much experience or authority), and then you factor in re-shoots, etc. Paltrow and Lange signed on for a very different movie and had no choice by the time they were filming. It's a common casualty in the film business.
And truth be told, I don't think it's horrible. I think it, like any film, needs to be taken for what it is, not for what it is not. It came out when I was a teenager and I loved it, watching it over and over again. I have since watched it again, as an adult, and I no longer love it like I did, but I still enjoy aspects of it, and think it need not be regarded as terribly as it has been.
Plus there is just a luminosity to Jessica Lange herself; she is so beautiful. -

I don't know why people trash this film so much. I know it's not great, but anything Jessica Lange does is worth watching. I think she is the greatest actress of our time and little Gwyneth could have learned a thing or two about acting from Miss Lange! This film is a guilty pleasure I throw into my DVD player every now and then. I own everything Jessica lange has done on DVD and while far from being my favorite film of hers, I still think it's fun to watch!

I wonder what kind of drama was between Lange and the director. She must've been pissed to say something like that in public and say the movie was a piece of sh*t. Usually when you respect a director, you don't hate on the movie so much even if the directing wasn't that great. Maybe she was so frustrated with the changes in the script at the last second.
