The acting is just atrocious.
They act like porn actors only without the porn.
Is it supposed to be bad like that on purpose?
A parody of porn?

I hate this movie (I hate most Paul Thomas Anderson movies). I don't see the appeal at all. It's such a gross movie. Junkies are such losers. Porn culture is gross. I'll watch porn, but these people are pigs and slobs. Nothing about the way they live, particularly back in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, is appealing to me. They're like watching animals.
It's been on a few times on Pluto lately. I usually leave it on while doing something. I always try to see what's so appealing about it. It's fascinating on some level, but just so gross and poorly acted. -
