What was the deal with that part? Lefty found that the yacht that Donnie had procured was owned by (or at least being used by) the feds. When he confronted Donnie with the pic, DOnnie just kind of brushed it off by playing dumb. But then Lefty just seemed to forget about it.
Was the indication that Lefty just didn't want to believe anything bad about the guy who was his only friend or was he convinced that it wasn't actually the same boat? Was this in the book and was it explained any more than it was in the movie? -

Well Lefty was never convinced it wasn't the same boat, he knew it was the same boat and Donnie never suggested anything to the contrary. Donnie suggested that the FBI set them up which isn't an implausible explanation since in a way that's exactly what happened, it was just Donnie himself who organised the setup. Even if Donnie wasn't a Fed but a genuine wiseguy the FBI may well have set him up when they heard a bunch of mobsters were struggling to hire a boat.
My interpretation of Lefty's expression is that he's still unsure. I doubt he just forgot about it but they're about to whack out Sonny Red's kid and he's fully aware that if Donnie is a rat Left gets a bullet too. I think he's prepared to take Donnie at his word for the moment.
