LEAN?? haha. He'd already started getting chunky by Under Seige 2. The black oversized leather trench is pretty much Tubby Seagal's uniform in all of his movies now. Rumour has it, he has an appetite like Elvis.

The guy has put on a lot of weight. That is "clear". He wears big coats to hide it. Also clear. I get it, you're a fan. Believe me, nothing wrong with that. But facts are facts. -

Exactly lola, it pisses me off coz Ive always been a real huge fan of the man, but its the darn truth. Have you seen "Rusland", his latest DTV flic?? Check out the scene where hes running down an alleyway I think it was, wearing a black shirt, he looks obese, kind of shocked me when I saw the scene. What I dont get about this guy is how can an Aikido expert whos been training martial arts for more than 30 years be in such a bad shape?? Does he not even train any more??

Unfortunately, that's the downside of defensive martial arts forms like Aikido and Judo. The practitioners spend little time training their bodies for offensive tactics where they need to be more active. Those forms rely more on joint locks and using the opponents weight against them rather than aggressive punches and kicks. You'd think he'd at least do some strength training. He needs a trainer who can kick his ass.

I trained in Aikido for around 7 years and around 90% of all the Aikido masters i ever met were all pretty stocky, no Van Damme or Bruce Lee-type nerve sinewy people, mostly all stocky, even chubby at times. Luckily my teacher did emphasize a lot of callistenic workout when I trained with him (hes probably one of the very few lean and sinewy Aikido teachers i ever saw) but youre right that in these type of deffensive martial arts and especially Aikido, its kind of like a "comfortable" martial art where the person doesnt really rely on their physique (as it envolves locking, throwing and neutralising). If you look at it from this point of view, it kind of fits in the whole Steven chubby explanation. My God, when they show on TV films like Nico Above the Law or Hard to Kill I even see him skinny in those movies as compared to his latest DTV crap! -

I saw this crappy movie once, years ago after it came out on video, and the one thing that I couldn't stop laughing at was his audacity. I couldn't understand how he couldn't just shed a few pounds, and instead chose to wear those long jackets that were obviously worn to cover his gut.
There was one scene in particular that I'll never forget; he's outside in the Southern heat at one point, testing water samples or something, and just looking at the climate, you can feel the humidity through the screen, and there he's standing, a massive robe-like leather jacket down to his knees, wrapped around him, and he's acting like that's normal in 98 degree weather in the summer in the South! -

Seagal is Seagal i mean, don't try to find realism in his movies Its all about him kickin the butts of some thugs in a matter of seconds and the rest is all storyline
Yet i do enjoy his movies I don't know, usually i get bored when there is too much stories and not much fights, but Seagal for some reason always seems to entertain me in any way either by dialogue or butt kickin
There is not ONE single Seagal movie that i would compare to the likes of Bloodsport or Kickboxer or any old school Cynthia Rothrock martial arts movie, BUT like i said, i never put a Seagal film and say beep im bored". For some reason i am entertain by his OVER THE TOP ass kickin scenes and the stories are always interesting enought..
Thats the reason why i own a lot of Seagal movies and looking to one day complete the collection got to admit i own over 300 martial arts movies so Seagal is PART OF the thing, got to respect the man for what he accomplish, even if your not a fan of his movies.
