Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Fire Down Below

I had originally posted on the movie Exit Wounds how Segal happens to over power 2 very large bouncers in the club scene and someone told me that he does the same thing in this movie. So I go and rent it (because I gotta MVP card and can rent all I want this month) and I see the scene in the end where he is confronted by the 5 guards in suits and I have to say those are the worst lookin bodyguards ever. The biggest one was segals height, one of the looked 50 with white hair and was balding, there was another with a beergut and the other to fell before I gotta look at them. The fat guy in the bar was larger than any of those guys.
I remember Orin Hanner saying "these guys will have him on the floor in 5 minutes" and I was laughing out loud.

muscles and youth doesnt make for a good bodyguard. It's much more about experience and close kombat skills.
And it's a SEAGAL-MOVIE. What do you expect? That the guards wipe the floor with him? He has to win (easily!!), no matter how old, trained or skilled his opponents are.

Me too! Especially since it's, like, the tenth time you hear one of the bad guys say that, even after they've been watching Seagal beat the hell out of everyone with a minimum of fuss for the entire movie.
I think "Fire Down Below" represents a milestone in Seagal's filmography. Everything before this was enjoyable as a guilty pleasure, no matter how stupid ("Hard to Kill"), preachy ("On Deadly Ground"), or blatantly egomaniacal (all of 'em). Starting with this one, though, it looked like neither Seagal nor any of the crew really cared about what they were doing, and it only got worse from here.

Sorry for the late follow-up to a message I already replied to (last year!?), but the cinematic gem that is 'Fire Down Below' was on again recently, and the thought occurred to me: why would Hanner think it would take 5 minutes to subdue someone and get them on the floor? Did he think they'd stand there and talk to Seagal for 4:45 about baseball, then suddenly jump him in the last 15 seconds?

He says 30 seconds, not five minutes.
