Suzie was not a gossiper

The girl at the dance that was pregnant was Suzie. I don't think Suzie was a total gossiper. Yes, she was kind of abrasive. But, she told the truth. Sometimes the truth hurts. Prior to that, Birdie didn't know why Justin left his job in California. He never directly answered Birdie when she asked him. He just said, "I came back. Didn't I?". He was very evasive. He liked Birdie and the subject made him uncomfortable. If Birdie hadn't of talked with Suzie, she would not have known why Justin left California.. If Suzie had been lying, then I would have called her a gossiper. Because that would be slander. Justin's job did not work out. Suzie happened to know the real reason why, and it wasn't flattering. He wasn't fast enough to please his superior. It doesn't mean he is stupid. It is just that he didn't meet the standards of someone else. Suzie called Dot, "Polka Dot". That was her nickname in high school. Even though Dot didn't choose that nickname, that is what the other kids called her. Nicknames stick. Suzie didn't intend to say something mean about her. She just said her old nickname because that is how she knows her. It was probably rude of Birdie to look the other way. She doesn't have to participate in bad talk about others. But, it is not like she has never done or said anything about anyone before. What makes her think she is an angel from heaven? When people call others down for gossiping, they are acting all self-righteous. Sometimes when people avioid gossiping, they go the other way. They sugar-coat or water down the truth. They try to make things sound better than they are. In many instances, that is lying. There needs to be a middle ground.

Actually, Suzie was mean when she was talking about Dot. If I recall correctly, Suzie says, "Look at Polka Dot. A dounut's best friend". That is a mean and childish comment. The woman couldn't even bring herself to compliment Dot on her weightloss. Suzie, it seems, didn't have a kind word to say about anyone, except for herself. I hate people like her. (My MIL is like that)

Yes. I remember that. I thought she said Polka Dot was donut's best friend. Since I didn't know who "Donut" was, I didn't get it. Suzie kept tooting her horn and putting others down. That wasn't nice. Many of the people that Birdie grew up with had that small town mentality. That is why she looked away. Maybe Birdie was like that in high school and Suzie just reminded her.

Suzie was a malicious gossip! How do you know what she said about Justin was true? Nobody else in the movie confirms that. She just said that she "heard he lost that big job in California because he wouldn't work fast enough". She "heard" that. That sounds like gossip to me!
And as for Dot, you don't think Polka Dot was a mean name? You could tell from the way Dot reacted when Birdee said it that she didn't like the nickname. Just because everybody else called Dot that doesn't mean it was nice. And then Suzie called her "the donut's best friend" because she used to be fat. Apprarently Suzie still thinks of her as being fat. Not very nice at all. -

Actually when Justin and Birdee are in the fishing boat he explains that he left his big job because he didn't have the freedom to do things right, his way. He was obviously a gifted carpenter and he was not satisfied churning out cookie cutter homes in the burbs.
