Something that always bothered me. . .
Okay so at the beginning of the movie Birdie gives Bernice the letter from her dad while they were in the car. Then later in the movie Bernice says something to Birdie, saying why did you pretend that letter was from daddy, and Birdie says something along the lines of "you're a smart girl Bernice.". . .So my question is did Birdie really write the letter and say that Bill wrote it or did Bill actually write the letter??
Not really important I just wonder what other people think -

Birdee wrote the letter in an attempt to protect Bernice.
When Bernice figured it out, the implication is that she also knows that her mother was only trying to protect her from the fact that her daddy really didn't want her.
At least that's how I (as a mom) see it. -

What do I think? I think honesty is
ALWAYS
the best policy even with kids. Just make it age appropriate, but give them credit for being able to handle FACTS not your misguided attempt to shield them from life. Backfires EVERY time and usually NOT in your favor! And does them a GREAT disservice.
An independent mind is difficult to enslave.
