Did the mother know?

Their mother certainly knew about the forbidden sex. She just chose to turn a blind eye to it, just the way my own mother once found my bubbler but never confronted me about smoking pot. Parents sometimes would rather pretend they don't know the truth to avoid an ugly confrontation.

I don't think the mother turns a blind eye at all. She herself has her own sexual issues (remember when she talks about having no idea who Marty and Jackie's father is?) and in her twisted way thinks that Marty and Jackie should be together in every sense of the word.

Yeah, my mom found my cigarettes once but didn't say anything about it, chose the "ignorance is bliss" route I guess. Of course cigarettes aren't really in the same category as incest lol.

She's quite similar to Katherine Hepburn in Suddenly Last Summer who adores her gay son so much, she'd rather have a relative lobotomized than have her reveal details about her son's bizarre death.
Bujold and Hepburn both know. -

I think the mom knew. I mean, isn't that the reason why Jackie-O was sent away? And remember the talk she had with Tori Spelling's character? She knew what was going with her twins but she didn't want anyone to rock the boat.

She definitely knew. That's a classic setup that we've seen replayed a million times, the mother in denial about incest or sexual abuse going on in her family. We seem to be seeing it in a big public way right now in the Casey Anthony murder trial.
Get on up. -

I think she does sort of know, but is a little off herself. Saying things like, "I look at you and wonder however did you fit in my womb," and "Jackie's hand was holding Marty's penis when they came out of the womb" is wacky.
You know how parents influence their kids? Well, this is a prime example.
