That has always been my understanding and my position as well. "Hate speech" needs to be protected speech. There are all kinds of speech that may not be nice, but when it comes to making speech illegal? Naw. Who's going to decide what's "hate" or "not hate".

Now about free speech, that has not really been threatened and probably never will be.
You can say what you want but if your employer finds out that it will be bad for the bottom line or the reputation of the company, you can be fired and that's legal.
