I assumed it was a family portrait that included the father/husband that she (the mother) wanted to bury in more ways than one!

I always thought that she noticed an old blood stain on the wallguess I should watch it again.

Here is a screengrab. Best I could do.

The painting is still hung in the opening sequence, but in 1983 it is gone.
Looks like an impressionist painting, but I can't identify which one. Anyone else?

i thought it was either a family portrait including mr. pascal or a one of just mr. pascal.
it's interesting that he is shown in the painting above the mantle in the flashback at the beginning, but we never see that full-size portrait any other time in the movie.

I always assumed it was probably a portrait of the father. It really is an intriguing little detail in the film.

I never thought about it being a family portrait/painting of the father. That is a very interesting and plausible theory. Thanks for giving me a new take on an all ready intriguing movie:)

Hmm I never thought about it being a missing painting at all. I thought maybe Lesly was touching where the wall had been repaired/repainted from where a stray bullet might've gone when Jackie-O shot Marty.

You can clearly see that there's been a painting forever in a spot, it's gotten miscoloured.

When I watch the opening sequence where young Jackie starts to run around all crazy in that room, I think I see that it's a picture of the twins next sitting next to each other as babies.
