One of my top ten movies. An Elmore Leonard plot that towers above mere studio scripts, QT tweaking it, a great cast, well acted. It's a clever subtle movie that you can watch again and again for both memorable screen gems and nuances that you haven't noticed before. If you can't see the difference between this cine masterpiece and TV junk, you should stick to watching TV.

I am watching it right now. Over rated? Well, I don't recall the critics or fans loving it when it first came out so I don't think I would say it was over rated. Not my favorite QT film, but I love the cast and the soundtrack.

Yes actually. I think you may have gone a bit far with your "on TV anytime" statement, but I do think its overrated by IMDB standards. The dialogue was often top notch, and the camera-work was some of Tarantino's best, but everything else let me dowm. Didn't really find much reason to invest in any characters, and the plot was sluggish & doesn't justify the running time. The climax was a big letdown as well. But I think Jackie Brown falls into that weird category on IMDB where its the overlooked film by a big name director, so it gets alot of the "this is the underrated masterpiece" treatment from people who want to stand out.

I enjoyed it, maybe not loved it, but I did like it and would consider watching it again. I've only just seen it recently, it's a pretty good movie with great music, acting, plot, love the trademark Tarantino look and feel but it didn't blow my mind or anything.
It is leagues above anything "you can see on TV anytime", though I mean, what are we talking, made-for-tv movies? Dramas? Have you beep watched TV recently? It's really only a quarter gold, the rest is beep -

Yes, just watched it and it didn't do much for me. The plot was interesting but I just didn't care about any of the characters. DeNiro was pretty good, or at least, I thought the scene where he showed his true colours when he shot Melanie was shocking, which made it good. SLJ was a bit of a cartoon character for me. I did hate him and I was glad when he was killed but it was too quick and easy for my liking. I'd have liked to see that evil git suffer a bit. I liked Max but the part was played in such a low key way, I half expected him to double cross Jackie in the end. And I can't buy Keaton as a tough guy, no matter what he is in.
That brings me to Pam Grier. I can't help but think that the only reason she was chosen for this film was because of her iconic past. I didn't mind her, but I never really liked her. Sure, SLJ's character deserved to be double crossed and killed, but was Melanie just collateral damage? Jackie might not have known SLJ would kill Melanie but she sure as hell knew how mistrustful he was of everyone, so she must have known it was likely.
When Jackie walks away at the end with the money, after causing the deaths (directly or indirectly) of three people, and putting the life of a decent man (Cherry) at risk, how is she any better, morally, than SLJ's character? Then, to top it all, she chose the money over love. I really struggled to find anything to redeem her character, or make me care whether she 'won' in the end. -

By the way, this story is not 'common'. Think of it as 'classical'.
