I agree, Mary and Max was amazing.
For girl movies look up the Fanning sisters (Dakota and Elle). Phoebe In Wonderland in particular. Secret Life Of Bees
And Miyazaki likes girl characters a lot.

My recommondations would be, Tiger bay 1959 (With Hayley Mills, wonderful acting in this one. It's too about a friendship between a very special girl and a male adult. )
And Paper moon 1973 (With Tatum O'neal, she's playing a very special little girl too. )
