I think Trent threw down the towel and comb for Devon, so that if she went to the bridge in the future and saw them, she'd know he cared. I think the river rising and forest growing was Devon's imagination - a symbol of what she wished to happen.

That makes sense. Thanks for sharing your input. I just watched it last night and was kind of curious about the ending myself.

I think they crossed the border from reality to fantasy as soon as Devon began narating. She saw Trent drive away, and in her weird little world she plugged this into her ongoing Baba Yaga chronicle, maybe as a way of digesting it emotionally. I absolutely love the ending, but I think if the camera had kept rolling, we would have seen Trent arrested and Devon institutionalized (after all she shot that guy, ffs). I'm glad the film ended precisely where it did. 🙂

Agreed on both counts-Devon's narration also seemed to me the point where reality shifted. And, I agree, it is likely Trent would have been caught, Devon would have been locked up. I suppose it's possible her rich and socially amibitious parents would do their best to sweep the whole thing under the rug, but that would assume they could pull a lot of strings.

I love the movie (esp adore the cinematography in the tree) and I like your suggestion that its Devons way of digesting it emotionally, and its more satisfying, after delving into so much realism with the climax, the scenes with Trents parents, that the film ends as it does and the viewer is left to draw their own conclusions.
In Southeast Asia we'd call this kind of thing bad Karma.

If trent would've been caught he would certainly have been framed for the shooting. I think he's escaped into anonymity at some trailer park though.

I don't think either of them would get locked up. she shot that guy in the defense of another. Plus, she's underage.

Her narration is actually a part of a fairytale story from the Grimm brothers. I remember reading one of the Grimm fairytale stories about a girl who was given a magic red towel and comb that possessed the power of springing up a river and a forest. Because that part is from a fairytale, I think it just represents her unaffected innocence from reality.
So, in my opinion, the ending was imagination on both Devon and Trent's part. I believe this because when Trent drops the comb and the forest springs up, he checks the rearview mirror and is surprised to see an actual forest behind him. It shows that he's starting to think more like Devon now. Throughout the movie, she kept telling him this strange story about a witch and a forest and a gate, but he just brushed it off with weird looks and remarks such as, "I have to get up early. Go to sleep."
But after Devon gives him the comb and towel, he asks something along the lines of, "What happens in the end?" as if he's interested. So not only does Devon believe this fairytale innocence, but also Trent starts to now.

I agree with you. I thought they were both imagining the forest and the river to escape the reality of what was going to happen to then now that the story had ended and to show that Trent was starting to think more like Devon. I like to think that Trent does get away and makes a new like for himself.

Great ending, and as far as I am concerned, what happened was not imagined.

Very good ending. I think what happened wasn't imagines, for when Trent throws the comb and looks back, he's suprised to see the Forest.

Personally I hated the ending, with all those trees growing up and water flooding the bridge. It was a symbolism of Devon's story, I get it, but it looked ridiculous to me.

This board keeps saying - Trent would have been caught - but caught for what? He didn t do anything. He just got beat up.
I think they were mostly trying to get him out of town, in which they had suceeded.

The tree thing also happened at the end of season one of The 4400 which also starred a little girl, though the scene didn't involve the girl.
