I've read the book, and find this adaptation to be pretty good. Sue Lyon was so pretty, but I could also tell when she went off-script (like the scene when she's in the car with Humbert). James Mason did a great job presenting as being so infatuated and overbearing.
I remember an episode where Sue Lyon was the Mystery Guest on
What's My Line
and of course, Bennett Cerf was all giggly. I swear I can see him drool when beautiful women appear on stage.

I prefer this version to the one from 97, but I don't hate the remake. James Mason is a favorite of mine. The whole cast was great, but I could sit and listen to Mason read the phone book and I'd be enthralled.
I like the other one because of Irons. It didn't quite have the humor that this one has.
Yes. I recently saw that episode of What's My Line. I have also noticed that the ladies on the panel can occasionally become a bit catty when there is a beautiful lady contestant.

I'm also a fan of James Mason.
As far as the women getting catty around other beautiful women, I guess I never noticed it, especially with Miss Arlene. She always seemed very appreciative and complimentary of everybody, including the gorgeous women.
I remember a woman from China who did a bicycle act in a circus, and Arlene was on with Martin, and Arlene made a comment like, "I know my husband is keeping an eye on your figure," - but it all seemed to be in such good humour and in jest.
What surprised me was Debbie Reynolds, someone I adore to bits. She was one of the worst panel members, and just took up space and time. She was divine as a mystery guest (remember her imitation of Zsa Zsa, dahling?)
Miss Dorothy could be rather snobbish and elitist, always sizing people up, especially way back when the show started in the early 50's when they'd inspect the guests bodies (flex your arm for me Mr. So-and-so?) and touching their shoulders, Dorothy checking their labels on their jackets….
I always liked it when a few guests were wearing that famous diamond heart that Arlene helped to make famous!

Yes, I suppose that Arlene more or less joked when her husband Martin couldn't keep his eyes in his head, although I sometimes felt that it was hurtful of him to flirt when his lovely wife was sitting right there.
Yes. Dorothy was blunt, short with the guests, and could be catty.
I hated the way they inspected the contestants. I was like watching farmers at a livestock auction checking out the stock!
How demeaning for those people… and all for the possibility of maybe winning a little money. Of course, being on TV for many of them was probably a thrill back then. I was just glad that they dropped the inspection after a few seasons.
I remember Debbie Reynold's Zsa Zsa imitation. She was so cute. there was another time when she was on with then husband, Eddie Fisher. I just watched her in the movie, Mother on Mother's Day. Great movie. Possibly her last, or one of her last ones.
Everyone loved that famous Heart necklace of Arlene's. Did you know that somebody on the street grabbed it and took it from her in later years? what a terrible thing to do!

Yes, I read about that! How shocking.
Another thing that was upsetting was that she was always so glamourous and articulate, so knowledgeable and witty, and she ended up having Alzheimer's I believe. Just so sad.
I always felt she was the epitome of perfection in every way.

I had no idea about the Alzheimer's. Such a lovely and glamorous lady.
She was stylish! I love watching the reruns just to see what the ladies are wearing!

She wore a lot of mink. I remember someone on the panel made a comment about how one of Arlene's minks was $3,000. BACK THEN? Yikes!
She always wore it draped over her right shoulder, and I can't figure out how she got it to stay so superbly without falling off.
Dorothy always reminded me of a little doe. The way she pranced in so delicate in her little shoes, her tiny frame.
Did you see the episode where she had an alleged "sneezing attack" that looked like she was actually having a petit mal seizure, while introducing Bennett Cerf?
Or when the guy ran up on stage (once was with Uncle Milty as the Mystery Guest)…it happened twice.

Oh, I'm all for comfort, but even when I dress up, I pale in comparison to those ladies.
Yes. Dorothy was petite. I don't think I remember her sneezing attack. I'll have to keep watching more episodes. I'll also have to check out all of Milton Berle's appearances.

This was before it started to become really public about her heavy drinking and reliance on barbiturates.
I still find her death extremely suspicious.

That certainly was an odd little moment in the beginning there, wasn't it? That's what we call the mouth and the mind not working together. In her case? On the way to loaded. Further on, she forgot that it's one question per customer when talking to the mystery guest/s.
I had read that she could put it away. She even injured herself at times. Remember the dislocated shoulder when she was off the show for a bit and then came back with a cast? I can't remember what excuse they used but I read that happened when she was drunk.

Yep, I totally remember that. I wouldn't be surprised if she wiped out while being plastered. They eventually even got to joking about Dorothy's drinking in later seasons. Around the holidays you could tell when the whole cast tossed back a few before the show.
I noticed she had missed quite a few shows and had a lot of "flus" and "colds" and things.
Remember Arlene with her eye patches? Sheesh, only Arlene could make eye patches look sexy as hell, I swear! She had such dreadful luck with her eyes. She also never seemed to age, did you notice? As for John Daly, it was weird watching him go through his divorce while on air and nothing gave it away. (OT: I never could figure out the elaborate way he was cross-combing his hair either and that little square in the front…think it was real?)
Then how about when Arlene got in that car accident and someone died? Or when an air conditioning unit fell out of her window and injured someone on the street (or maybe that was what killed someone? I don't recall). I remember the car accident, Arlene came in with a sling and yet always looked so elegant, so glamourous, even while injured. Dorothy was snockered at one point and made a rather tasteless joke a few weeks later about an air conditioner falling out of a window. (Usually Dorothy showed a little more taste…)
How about that blond wig Dorothy wore for one of those Halloween episodes? Yikes! Or Arlene's Easter hat that Martin bought for her (it looked like a dreadful flower pot crossed with a bathing cap). She loved Martin dearly for wearing that thing on TV.
