The original poster of this question hates this film but loves Family Guy. That should tell you all you need to know of his maturity, mental development and attention span - i.e. he's a thick bonehead who'd die of shame if he ever showed a glimmer of human feeling, which in his case is limited to bashing his girlfriend (if by a slim chance he has one) over the head and dragging her back to his cave. I'm surprised he can even type with those poor, sore knuckles of his - given that they spend most of their time dragging along the ground. Thankfully real men can admit to liking something other than what he thinks suitable for guys - and maybe that's because some of us, unlike him, don't have the brain the size of a gnat's. He must be disappointed that not every guy fits his stereotype.
Go away you silly little boy and laugh yourself silly over your amateur-looking, unfunny cartoon. -

I have to agree with the OP to some extent
This is a movie that had some potential of being pretty great but got buried in inconsistencies that really insult the intelligence and the ending was beyond lame
The guy is
killed by a car in front of many witnesses there's no police or ambulances called? Are we to believe that his dead body was taken over, repaired, and then left the morgue? or is it that he magically got up and walked away in front of the horrified witnesses? Not to mention that he would have been taken to the hospital the girl works at.
Secondly,
the "guide" to the next existence who escorts millions of people to death has no inkling of what it's like to be human? even though he can read the thoughts of the humans?
Thirdly, the ending was
really a disappointment like it was phoned in by an eighth grader. What happened to dad's body? is it lying over the ridge waiting to be discovered? or was he beamed up by ascended aliens? wtf
?
I thought the ending would be something like:
He tells her that he lovers her now and forever then gets on a helicopter with dad and it crashes killing both of them.

20 minutes? Try 3000 minutes - I've seen this one about 20 times since it was in theatres. An epic yet intimate Capra-esque modern classic, where the value of life is appreciated as death looms - actually a typically 'male' existential concern, though no less relevant to females. The 'chick-flick' romance is merely a sub-plot, and is handled truthfully and deftly acted. There are just as many men in relationships as women, so I don't see why a well-handled portrayal of a relationship would be a problem for any non-sociopathic male (especially with the interesting sci-fi angle).
There's plenty to appreciate in this unique and brave film, if you can't/won't even engage with what's there then you're just advertising your shallowness, ignorance, and probable attention deficit disorder. That you do so with such self-importance and aggression just makes you even more tragic. -

I watched this in theaters when I was around 10 years old. I didn't like romance movies at all generally generally preferring action and comedies but I enjoyed this film and I actually enjoyed the romance in it as well. I found Claire Forlani's performance in particular to be quite charming & sincere. I appreciated the film's great soundtrack even then and I still enjoy the movie as an adult with repeat viewings. I was always confused by the fact that the film was not more highly regarded.

I made it all the way through, but had to keep pausing and going to do other things and kept fidgeting around because THREE HOURS of slooooooooow story. The romance would have been fine and the story great if it had been faster paced.

I do not consider myself as a representative specimen for male species - but I agree with your comment 100 percent.
I remember this movie was very big hit in 1998, 1999 - all talk shows, newspapers, magazine talked about this flick all the time. I never watched it since I can smell crap from afar.
Tonight this movie is shown on Italian TV station 27, and it took me 2 minutes to confirm what I sensed for 30 years - this movie is unwatchable piece of dreck.
